Friday, Dec. 4, 2011, the Invisible Children Benefit Show took place in the theatre from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The show was a fundraiser for this year’s Invisible Children project, Protection Plan. The Protection Plan helps to build radio towers in central Africa. This will allow the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) attacks to be tracked more easily because communities will be able to communicate to each other where the LRA is and to watch out for it. The goal was to raise $2,000.
The theme of this year’s show was “Hear Us Out.” This message was prominently placed in the hall in front of the theatre, and was reiterated throughout the show in brief poems and spoken words. “We came up with the theme together,” said co-president of the Invisible Children Club, senior Katya Murillo, “we liked this one and had a cool design idea.”
The show began with a brief introduction, and then the curtains open to reveal the Santiago Drumline. Their performance was followed by singers, dancers, and poems. One of the highlights of the first act was senior Tien Do, who played the upright bass, and then climbed atop of it to play the ukulele. “I have to be a clown and a musician at the same time,” he said. Other favorites of the first part of the show was senior Caresse Boulter, who sang three songs with a guitar, and the dance crew Rev Gen.
After intermission, the band Badlands of Maine sang a set of rock songs. More singers and bands followed them, including “Starbucks Guy” Brett Williamson and the band Start Today. The Santiago Break Dance Club also performed. The show ended with a dance performance by nationally-ranked dance crew Natural St8.
Invisible Children will be hosting another benefit show this spring.
