The library at Santiago High School will be closed to students for the first three weeks of school in order to distribute textbooks to its students.
Over these weeks, the library will distribute 20,000 textbooks. The bulk of this task is undertaken by librarian Mr. Theune, media tech Ms. Wilcox, and textbook clerk Ms. Segura, as well as parent volunteers from PTSA and students from EAC.
“We couldn’t do it all without them,” said Wilcox. She also expressed that the process has been moving smoothly this year, but students could help it along by remembering to carry their IDs with them.
The largest problem the library has with the distribution is when students fail to return their textbooks at the end of the year, resulting in a shortage for the current year. It should also be noted that these students will end up having to pay a fine of around $100 should they never return the books.
After the textbooks have been handed out, the library will be open to students for after-school tutoring, computer and Internet access, use of novels and reference material, and as shelter from the heat.
