Kiss and Cry

Taylor Sanfillippo

The movie Kiss and Cry (based on a true story), directed by Sean Cisterna is about an 18-year-old figure skater, Carley Allison (Sarah Fisher) who is faced with a rare 1 in 3.5 billion type of sarcoma. Carley was given a tracheostomy in order for her to breath until she was able to use chemotherapy to shrink the tumor down.  She takes comfort in loving a classmate, John Servinis (Luke Bilyk) who Carley meets at a high school party. Carley also takes comfort in singing. She begins to post her singing videos online when she finds out about her cancer which gives her a platform of fame and prayers. During this difficult time her 2 sisters Riley and Samantha (Brittany Bristow and Julia Tomasone), mother, father, and her boyfriend. Carley fought very hard, being patient as they were able to remove the malignant melanoma in her trachea, but was unfortunately given bad news. Carley was surrounded by people she loved most and made medical history in her fight. Carley wrote a letter to cancer in a way that made it seem like her type of cancer was introducing itself to her body. ” In a figure skating competition, the area where you get your scores is called a kiss and cry. It was created by champions who came long before me, who realized its not about what happens when you’re in the box, just how many time you’re in it. How many time you keep putting yourself out there for marks and keep coming back no matter what the results are. Treat funerals like triumphs. What did that mean? It means that life is full of moments in which you can choose to smile or to not smile…. These last 2 years have taught me so much that I refuse to believe the cancer inside of me is a killer. It doesn’t mean it’s nice, but we all can make the choice. And I choose to smile. That’s my triumph.” – Carley Allison.
