Russia, Russia, Russia – Collusion or Delusion?

Chloe Boxer, Op/Ed Editor

A love affair between President Donald Trump of the United States and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. It seems to be everything politicians and the media can talk about. Anyone who remotely follows American politics is aware of the allegations put forth by Democrats, even before Trump was elected, of collusion between his campaign and the Russian government. Anyone who does not follow American politics is more than likely to have heard something about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump because it is all over social media and simply everywhere you look. Democrats – and some Republicans – will simply not stop screaming about Russia and their role in getting Donald Trump elected last year. In recent months, some light has been shed on this controversial topic and the allegations against the Trump campaign and administration have rapidly shifted to his opponent – Hillary Clinton.

Revelations have surfaced indicating the Democrat National Committee (DNC) was just as heavily involved in with the Russians as the Democrats have claimed the Republicans were. This evidence is more substantial than the claims put forth by the Democrats. The majority of “evidence” the Democrats offer in defense of their argument is about meetings the Trump campaign, and now administration, has had with Russians. We must remember – the United States meets with people from Russia all the time and this has been the case for decades. Meetings with Putin (and former presidents) did not stop when Barack Obama, or any Democrat president, was in office.

With the Democrats and their alleged ties to Russia, there is an actual paper trail and electronic proof to clearly document the DNC’s funding of a research firm, Fusion GPS, to gather negative information on Hillary Clinton’s political opponent, now President Donald Trump, and his apparent connections to Russia. Supporters of Hillary Clinton and the DNC began to fund research being conducted by Fusion GPS.

In June of 2016, Fusion GPS hired a former and now retired MI6 agent to gather harmful evidence on then candidate Trump. Christopher Steele compiled information from June to December of 2016 and then shared his findings with his clients. Fusion GPS then provided the FBI and the New York Times with the information put together by Steele. Fusion GPS claimed this research was “routine” and in May of 2017, the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Fusion GPS for more details on the memos compiled by Steele. The creation of a phony anti-Trump dossier, which made disturbing allegations against the President, have been a result of this research.

It appears that everything the Democrats have claimed Trump and his campaign have done with the Russians was also done by the accusers during the election in hopes of getting Hillary Clinton elected. The Democrats were colluding with the Russians at the exact time the Trump campaign is being accused of colluding with them as well. However, there is more substantial and solid evidence to prove the Democrats and Clinton herself were conspiring with Russia, rather than with Trump and Russia’s supposed interference with the election.

The results of the DNC’s involvement with Fusion GPS and the creation of a false dossier has directly led to the opening of a special investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is only investigating the Trump-Russia scandal because of the discoveries made by the DNC, who may have been working with the Russians to dig up dirt on Trump and his campaign.

In the interest of bipartisan judgement, both the Clinton-Russia scandal and the Trump-Russia scandal should receive equal scrutiny by special counsels and congressional committees.
