Snapchat Update: For Better or For Worse?
February 23, 2018
For the past few days, Snapchat has been updating itself on every smartphone. The new update comes with a whole new look and many new features. For example, Stories can now be found on the Friends page, along with normal Snaps and Group Stories. Snapchat has also added multiple more fonts that can be used for writing text on Snaps.
From the surface, this update seems much quicker, easier, and more interesting to use. However, many users disagree. Since the update was released, users everywhere began to complain about the new interface, saying it was much harder to find their friends and Stories on the app. Others automatically tried to do anything they could to prevent the app from updating on their phones. Yet, even with auto updates off and not enough storage to do the update anyway, Snapchat had a mind of its own.
Because of this, the amount of displeased users rapidly increased. The update eventually sparked a sort of social media revolution. The dissatisfaction grew and grew until an actual petition was started on Change.org. This petition was shared across social media apps and reached plenty of people. So far, it has officially gotten a million signatures and counting.
While this is a quite unusual and impressive feat for users, Snapchat is not required by any means, nor are they likely, to listen. In fact, this past Thursday, the CEO of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, spoke up about the situation. At the Goldman Sachs’ Tech Conference, he explained that the update is here to stay, no matter the criticism on social media or how many supporters such petitions get.
So for now, no matter how much we refuse, all we can do is get comfortable with Snapchat’s new look because it’s not going to change anytime soon.
