Happiness at a Higher Cost

Hanna Rauls, Staff Writer

A trip to the “Happiest Place on Earth” tends to live up to its esteemed title for its large count of visitors; but at what cost?

In the second month of 2018, the prices of Disney admission went up around 20%. Prices were raised only slightly but still an increase was made to an already thought to be an “inflated price” by the many consumers Disneyland still tends to earn though its timeless wonder and amusement. Disney’s 1955 opening day price of one dollar for each adult and fifty cents for each child, with an additional twenty-five to thirty-five cents- ten cents to twenty-five cents for children- for each attraction, a whole day with completing every offered attraction could’ve resulted in $8.70 for adults and $5.15. Disney’s constant increase in price every year from its opening day has clearly illustrated the growth that the evergrowing company has endured.

The crowds of Disney goer’s tend to drop a pretty penny in the pink piggy bank that the Disney corporation has created for themselves, so it’s hard not to ask why is this necessary? With a steady income of money from Disney there is no doubt that they do indeed spend a large portion to further and innovate their parks all over the world. It is hardly unknown among society that Disneyland in Anaheim, California is creating a Star Wars Land. There is constant modernization in many aspects and growth in the company that we have always loved. Money is a game for such large corporations; a game that our favorite business that has produced the majority of our childhood memories must involve itself in. Truth be told Disney has become an empire. Between their myriad of parks, ownership of other franchises, and their countless products pertaining to their ever-flowing production of movies, the monster of money that has become Disney is indeed just that: a monstrous success.

Disney has dominated the cinema industry, it has heavily influenced our childhoods, and it has created places that are unbeknownst to such magic and euphoria. These all require money and in order to recive money that creates wiggle room for them, then perhaps raising prices is what needs to be done at the time being. The question hat refuses to be answered is fi they will ever lower their prices. It’s a dog eat dog world and Disney is near the top of the food chain. The economy begs for prices to be raised due to the demand that the society declares, Disney has never been one to ignore their guests and their requests. In fact, they have -throughout they years- warmly invited us into their castle gates and requested us to “be our guest” because “you’ve got a friend in me”. They have decided to maintain their charisma they have had since Walt himself roamed the park, and they have remained to innovate with their magic they hold so dearly to their name. With this distinguished name and brand, money becomes a large game piece in success. The officials at Disney want nothing better for their guests and if that means raising their prices for the time being to perhaps one day be lowered, then so be it and we wish the company all the best.
