Self-Care is not Bubble Baths and Junk Food
April 18, 2018
Self-care. Upon hearing those two words, what thoughts typically come to mind? A privileged girl with a Tumblr blog who encourages bath bombs and shopping sprees? Maybe the idea of spending a day free of work pops into your head; whatever you associate the term “self-care” with, it can be agreed that the meaning of this phrase has recently evolved to mean “self-treatment” rather than its original definition. People now increasingly use this as an excuse to exhibit behaviors that may actually be detrimental, harmful, and counter-intuitive to their social, physical, and mental health, including but not limited to: ditching school, “treating” themselves out with junk food every day, and not finishing necessary work to binge-watch a series on Netflix. While all of these actions may be pleasant and fun to do occasionally in a manner that does not negatively affect your life, the abuse of this word can lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits that provide no substantial benefits. There is nothing wrong with doing any of the activities listed as long as they are not done in excessive amounts and are not hidden under the excuse “self-care” to continuously do insignificant and unproductive things. Self-care has become romanticized, especially through the rose-colored lens of social media that portrays cliché advice masked with an appealing aesthetic, but the true meaning of what it means to partake in self-care is to, in the literal sense, take care of yourself. If you have been too depressed to shower or maintain your hygiene, make the effort to do so. If all of your chores have been left undone due to the chaotic bustle of life, take the effort to breathe, slow down, and do what is needed to properly function.
“Self-care” is not an excuse to neglect your responsibilities, nor should it be regarded as a scapegoat for your impetuous behavior. Take a break. Prioritize your mental health. Slow down and take care of yourself. Enjoy life and take care of yourself without being irresponsible.
