California Crazy Train

Thomas Cass, Writer

Many people would like to have a high-speed train that gets you from one big city to another big city and not for two places in the middle of nowhere. That is exactly what the “Crazy Train” will to do in 2029, going from San Jose to Fresno and back again.

When you start looking at the numbers needed to fund, maintain, and build the actual train makes you wonder how this was even approved. The grand estimated total to build a high-speed rail from Los Angles to San Francisco is 63 billion dollars at first. Then it was changed to 77 billion dollars a year ago, 3 years into construction. The route promises a “cheap” two-hours-and-40 minute ride one way according to the “Saft, Reliable high-speed passenger train bond act for the 21st century” which was passed by the people of California. Well, times have changed since that election of 2008 and so does the rail system. The system is scheduled to stop at 24 stations which will bring the travel time up, totaling 800 miles of track plus it’s now costing a grader total of around 90 billion dollars.

To think this was voted by the people with a 53-47% approval makes your brain explode. There are a few good things like you can go to fisherman’s wharf, hop on the train and spend the night in the city of Angels. What would be really nice is if you could put your car on it. Then you could ride with little worry, hop off, and take your car everywhere you wanted to go. In the meantime, we will all have to “Dream until your dreams come true.”
