Ralph Breaks the Internet – Movie Review
November 28, 2018
Following the release of Wreck-It Ralph, the popular 2012 Disney movie, a sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet, was released on November 21, 2018. This new movie entered the box office starring our beloved half-wit character, Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), and his adorable best friend, Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman). They embark on yet another adventure, with the arcade being newly introduced to the modern Internet, and Wi-Fi. The movie has lots of twists and turns, as well as a very important message you can get out of watching it.
Life is normal for our video game characters until Vanellope’s racer game breaks and in desperate need of a new part that the owner isn’t willing to purchase. Coincidentally, the Internet had just been plugged in next to them. The dynamic duo of Vanellope and Ralph decides to sneak into the Internet and buy the part needed for the former’s game. Never being to the Internet before, they are quickly and easily lost. The movie portrays the Internet as a big city, similar to New York, with a huge skyscraper for every app you can think of. When trying to make the money necessary to buy the part for her game, Vanellope falls in love with a racing game called “Slaughter House.” Ralph is then faced with the difficulty of letting her stay in the Internet to pursue her dream. What I took away from this movie was that sometimes, you have to let people go, especially if they mean everything to you. Change is hard, but if it’s for someone’s benefit, then it’s probably for the best. I’ll even quote the movie when I say, “There’s no law saying best friends have to have the same dreams.” No matter how difficult and challenging it may be, it is important for best friends to encourage each other, and if yours doesn’t, are they really a good friend?
The production of this movie did an exceptional job when paying attention to detail, from viruses as actual bugs to ads posted as salespeople on the streets of the Internet. Using the Internet in this movie is a clever way for the audience to relate and find some comedy. As a teenager who uses the Internet daily, it was interesting to look at it from a new perspective. Overall, I think Disney did a good job in the creation of their sequel to our beloved Wreck-It Ralph.
