How The Media Let a Pop Icon Fall to Pieces
Read about how fame broke down one of Hollywoods’ most loved pop, but also lead to her freedom after 13 years

November 12, 2021, will be a day forever remembered for the “Baby One More Time” singer – Britney Spears. The permanent A-list pop singer was freed on this day from 13 years of abuse of power that turned a pop legend into a money-making scheme.
But after just over a year has passed since the termination, the question resides. – Does the iconic 2000’s pop singer want to celebrate and remember the reason why?
The singer failed to mention anything on her highly followed social media, regarding her celebrating 1 year of being free from her father, and the many other people who controlled her as if she was a puppet on strings. She has expressed how she feels “It’s embarrassing and demoralizing, what I’ve been through. And that’s the main reason I’ve never said it openly,” Spears got out in broken words. “I honestly don’t think anyone would believe me.”
There is no doubt about it, Britney had a noteworthy influence on pop culture in the Y2K era. The impact she left on her fans threw the court system and its flaws – turned an icon into a slave to her father, who made a hefty profit off of his daughter’s earnings by being his daughter’s legal conservator. Fans who would rally for her independence would be turned into tears of joy once hearing she would no longer be a conservatee under which Jamie Spears had authority over her.
Amidst Britney Spears’ – then only 26 years old – infamous public breakdown she faced in 2007, paparazzi could be found snapping pics of her unpredictable behavior that resulted in Britney being placed under a “5150” hold in a psychiatric hospital, where a mental evaluation was necessary. At the time, it was only a few months before her placement under the conservatorship, and the Hollywood celebrity would find herself kept under careful observation by the media. This was happening during her widespread divorce, and custody battle with Britney’s ex-husband – Kevin Federline. Paparazzi found major success by invading Britney’s personal space, and privacy by constantly photographing her in her most vulnerable state.
In those 13 years, the 2000’s legend- Britney Spears would be heavily demanded – both physically, mentally, and emotionally – through what is known as a “conservatorship”, which was the biggest, and the only obstacle in Britney Spears’ fight for freedom, as the legal entity prolonged her having to comply with whatever the people who legal control over her said.
Most of the time when someone is placed under a conservatorship, it is primarily because they are elderly, or have something that affects the person from being able to make financial, or medical decisions on their own. In this instance, they, or a relative may consider the help of a conservatorship. The court may then assist in appointing a professional who is not related to the person, or have any relations to the conservatee if possible, to prevent any misuse of power.
Britney’s experience being in a conservatorship however was much different and was for many other reasons than what we have documented on paper. The multimillion-dollar fortune of one of Hollywoods most iconic celebrities was placed in the hands of her dad, who was not always mentally present, and was intoxicated during a lot of Britney’s upbringing, but was quick to “be there” for her once he realized that his successful pop-singer daughter was in a dark place.
At the ripe age of just 26 years old, Britney – not knowing how to respond to the public’s close eye on her, was extremely vulnerable, and probably should not have given the kind of trust she had for people around her.
Given the idea to be Britney’s conservator, with full financial control over his daughter’s success – he did exactly that, and after 13 laboring years, the court gave Britney – who by this point had years of anger building up in her – the time of day to finally come forward on her own, in a very rare public court appearance, about what she was going through, what she was being threatened to do, and felt she had to hide what she had been truly feeling to the public. The court system – which failed the singer multiple times – had finally ruled to terminate the conservatorship – effective immediately following Spears’ emotional court testimony, where she told the judge “I want to end the conservatorship without having to be evaluated.”
Britney – during the 13 years of the conservatorship – would continue working, going on a world tour the year following her placement in this position, releasing one of the most iconic albums of its time, making television appearances, and even having a Las Vegas residency. “I shouldn’t be in a conservatorship if I can work. The laws need to change,” Britney said in a broken voice, “I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”
In fear of what the results may bring, Britney feared the court system in California would not care to hear, or believe what Britney was going through under wraps, inevitably leading to her many (and I mean many) Instagram posts, which may seem bizarre to some, in which she can be seen dancing in her living room or having a fashion show in her kitchen, Britney’s true fans know that it is just an average day in the life of Britney!
We now hear from the star herself, where she takes to Instagram how she feels she has used her Instagram account to cope with her feelings “I just want to tell you guys a little secret … I believe as people we all want the fairy tale life and by the way, I’ve posted … my life seems to look and be pretty amazing … I think that’s what we all strive for !!!! I’m bringing this to people’s attention because I don’t want people to think my life is perfect because IT’S DEFINITELY NOT AT ALL … and if you have read anything about me in the news this week … you obviously really know now it’s not !!!! I apologize for pretending like I’ve been OK the past two years … I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me … but honestly who doesn’t want to capture their Instagram in a fun light !!!! Believe it or not, pretending that I’m OK has actually helped”
So now that it has been over a year, and Britney has taken some time to heal and live life to the fullest, we fans should not expect a tour from the singer, as she has spoken about an indefinite hiatus, but who knows, she has many people’s attention, and she deserves the attention from many more and she hopes that her father will soon be faced with the same amount of pressure he put on her for so long, so we could expect a memoir in the future.
