The toxic truth about Buzzfeed..
December 15, 2022
As many of you might know Buzzfeed is a famous company that produces entertainment videos, articles, etc. Buzzfeed was founded on November 1, 2006, as an independent company where that made news articles and quizzes. Eventually, they created a youtube channel in 2011, and they currently have over 20.2 million subscribers. From 2011-2018 Buzzfeed videos started getting very popular and multiple creators were making videos for the channel. After a while, numerous channels that were a part of BuzzFeed started getting created like As/is, Ladylike, and many more. But after a few years, many people started noticing that multiple creates were no longer part of Buzzfeed.
Some of the most famous creators who had left were The try guys, Sofia Nygaard, Michelle Khara, and many more. Not many creators at that time spoke out about leaving Buzzfeed but instead mainly talked about how they were going to transition to creating content independently. Though as more months and years went by more and more creators spoke out about their experience at BuzzFeed and explained why they left. For example one of the first YouTubers that spoke out just after leaving six weeks later was Sofia Nygaard, She posted a youtube video on her channel called “Why I left Buzzfeed”.
In the video she explains why she left and how they treated her, she explains in a calm collected manner how she simply felt that she was not included in important meetings and conversations about the company and her own channel that another colleague and she created with Buzzfeed. And in a result, she decided that it would be best if she no longer worked with BuzzFeed. Unlike Sofia, other creators have spoken out speaking more negatively about the company and their experiences. A good example of this is The kitchen & Jorn show, these are previous Buzzfeed employees that made videos with Ladylike. Two years ago they released a video titled “Why we left Buzzfeed” and in the video, they spoke about how BuzzFeed did not allow them to have needed days off and how they truly overworked them. Kristen who is a part of the channel spoke about how she had anxiety constantly that was so bad that she even had developing suicidal thoughts. In the rest of the video, she explains in detail most of the hardships she faced while working there, for example, they had limited recourses for videos, they did not have much of a voice on what they did, and they did not get paid a fair amount.
Although many people including myself in the past thought that BuzzFeed would be a great and fun environment to work in, after watching all of the videos I have completely changed my opinion. Although watching these videos gives me a good perspective on the future and how I would like to be treated in a work environment. Seeing all the successful creators that have left and are successful like Emmy winner Quinta Burnson gives me hope that if I am in a toxic work environment I can leave and keep being successful.
