Shark Squad Wiffleball

Mitchell Turner, Staff Writer

Shark Squad is where all the Special Education and Life Skills students at Santiago High School come together and play baseball. They have great teachers and helpers. The helpers love their kids very much and enjoy seeing a smile on their faces. So, the Santiago baseball team helps put a smile on their faces. The baseball team helps put a smile on their faces every other week going out and having a great time teaching the Shark Squad how to play wiffleball.

The baseball team has been doing this for a while. And we plan to keep on doing it. The shark squad students are very excited every time they come out. Each individual has a buddy that we teach to play wiffleball. Some have more skill than others but one thing they all have in common is that they all have a smile on their faces and just have fun.

When we go out on Wednesdays, we normally put our backpacks in the clubhouse then we go out and find our buddies. We proceed to go and set up the bases and set up the tees for the students to hit off of. Then we have the students pick if they want to play the field or go hit. Then we just have a great time for 30 minutes. My buddy’s favorite thing is to hit. And then after he hits the ball he gets to run around the bases. But when we are on the field, he lets nothing past him and when he gets the ball, he throws it to first base. It is so enriching, thrilling, and so fun to see our buddies go out and play wiffleball. It’s a nice change of scenery to do nothing else but play wiffleball.

After that, we are all done with the 30 minutes we go and get in two lines the Shark Squad gets in one line and the baseball team gets in the other and we go and high-five each other. Then we say goodbye and are all smiling and happy that they came out and had a great time with the baseball team.

The baseball team is so happy that we are able to have a great time with the Shark Squad students and we hope to have many more fun times with the students. The baseball team also has a great time seeing the smiles on their faces about learning something we do as a sport, and they think it is so fun. The Shark Squad group is a great group and has amazing people in it and I’m so glad I get to spend time teaching them wiffleball. We only hope to get more moments like this with our beloved Shark Squad.
