No Spoilers!
The Thanksgiving Movie was released on November 17, 2023.
It received an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, 6.9/10 on IMDb, and a 63% on Metacritic, with an overall audience rating of 3.6/5 amongst 367 ratings.
One of the reviews described it as,
“A campy, polished, refreshing slasher gem full of mystery, suspense, self-awareness, smarts, and gruesome kills. This spectacle solidified that Eli Roth has still got it and was meant to direct horror cinema. I sometimes forget that the slasher sub-genre can rarely be “elevated horror” or master classes like Psycho (1960), Peeping Tom (1960), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Black Christmas (1974), Halloween (1978), Sleepaway Camp (1983), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Child’s Play (1988), Candyman (1992), & Scream (1996). As an avid horror fan, this is probably tied up with Saw X, Evil Dead Rise, & Talk To Me for best horror film 2023. This amazing mash-up of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” & “Scream” made Scream VI look like amateur hour. Eli Roth’s “I Know What You Did Last Thanksgiving” deserves all the collective praise from critics and audiences. I am thankful we finally have a Thanksgiving-themed masterpiece added to the horror library that will age like fine wine.”
“Awful, awful film. I thought Exorcist: Believer was the worst flick I saw this year, but Thanksgiving comes in before the end of the year to beat it out. I have only done one Google review, but I feel a special obligation to warn my fellow citizens about this garbage. The main characters are pointless and contrived; there is no reason to care about them. I suspect Roth perhaps wrote this story in middle school, and he may have found it cleaning out his childhood bedroom at his parents’ house during a rough stretch of writer’s block. The big reveal of the killer and their motivation at the movie’s end is completely tacked. It’s like Roth became so entrenched with the passable gore sequences and forgot who the killer was at the end. I liked Cabin Fever and Hostel and thought he was fairly underrated. But now I’m not so sure. I think DGA and WGA should have a suspension system for when a writer/director creates something terrible. He should be put on a professional growth plan and have his scripts scrutinized by a committee before he can make his next film.”
Amidst all the discussion, I decided to check it out in theaters firsthand.
If you’re sensitive to gore or blood, I highly recommend skipping this one on your “Movies to Watch” list. I appreciate horror films that delve deep into the raw and brutal aspects. The character development was better in certain characters than in others, and the acting was. The mystery was well-plotted and showed the reality of the hostility in people at Black Friday events. By the time the murderer was revealed, I had finally noticed the numerous clues provided even before the big reveal, but it was still a complete surprise. If you like movies such as Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street, or any franchise featuring an unknown or known killer, you’ll likely enjoy this movie.

I love the organization of your writing by starting with other people’s reviews and contrasting the positive and negative aspects of the movie. I would agree with your rating as I just saw it recently. I love the Thanksgiving environment and the mystery of the plot.
