The 90s era has been among the most inspirational eras due to its well-liked music, style, culture, etc. Popular trends from the 90s are still being used today, featuring different clothing brands such as JNCO, Levis, Reebok, and Harley Davidson, which were all at their peak in the 90s. Not only is the clothing still being influenced, but the 90s arguably had some of the best songs and artists, TV shows and movies, etc.
In the 90s, one of the most popular genres of music was rap/hip-hop. “Rap and hip-hop rose from subculture status in the 1980s to world domination during the 1990s, and both genres’ dynamism caused this success.” Some of the most popular artists were Snoop-Dog, the Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac, Public Enemy, N.W.A, etc. All these artists and many more dominated the Billboard charts. In 2021, “almost a third, or over 90 million Americans listen to hip-hop.” It’s not only hip-hop and rap that were at their high in the 90s; popular artists such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, R.E.M, etc. “Americans who say they listen to music from each decade, from the pre-1950s to 2020s. 60% of respondents listened to music from the 1990s”. This shows that more than half of the U.S. population is still listening to music featured from the 90s. Many of these artists were featured on shirts and are still on clothing items today.
90s clothing is still being heavily used by many others today. We can even see this being shown by Santiago High School students. Popular brands include JNCO, Harley Davidson, DC shoes, Doc Martins, etc. Many of these popular 90s brands were used by skaters in the 90s, and they are brands that can still be seen today. Etnies, DC, Vans Half Cab, Nike SB Dunk, Osiris, etc. Not only are these being worn, but companies are bringing back that “90s look” to their shoes. A good example of this would be the “Vans Upland”, featuring a chunky look for more durability for skaters and a stylish look for everyone. It’s not only shoes; pants with a similar style from the 90s are also being manufactured. Empyers is a popular one, featuring their baggy-type style for jeans and corduroys. In the 90s, especially in the skate culture, baggy clothing was used to provide more comfort and a stylish look.
The 90s was one of the best eras for inspirational movies. An abundance of beloved movies today came out in the 1990s. These films include Toy Story, The Lion King, Fight Club, Titanic, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, and many more. The Lion King is one of the most loved Disney movies of all time. It’s the one movie that everyone knows. “ Well, over a hundred million people have seen The Lion King.” Not only that, but the first Toy Story was the start of one of the most popular franchises in Pixar. Adding on to that, it was ALSO the very first 3D animated movie. Creating a whole new perspective on animated television forever. “the iconic Toy Story came along as the first fully 3D, computer-animated feature-length film. The success of the innovative Toy Story, both critically and commercially, placed it firmly into the limelight.” All of these factors show that the 90s was an inspirational, trend-setting era, which is why many of its elements are being inputted in 2024.
