On October 1, 2024, Mexico officially inaugurated its first women president, Claudia Sheinbaum. She has become the first female president of Mexico. She is a member of the ‘Morena’ party, the largest political party in Mexico, and will be the second president representing the party. She is 62 years old and a former scientist. Morena is a self-described left-wing and populist party that started just 10 years ago. Sheinaum was previously the head of government of Mexico City from 2018-2023. Sheinbaum’s predecessor was Lopez Obrador, and the ‘Morena’ party member was first elected president.
As the first woman president, she has promised to combat the rising violence against women, support reproductive rights, and strengthen legal protection for women. A significant challenge for Sheinbaum’s presidency is the violence and crime in Mexico caused by drug cartels. Sheinbaums’ plan to combat this is to implement social programs to address the root causes of these issues, such as poverty, lack of education, and lack of opportunities. She also plans to strengthen law enforcement and root out government and law enforcement corruption. She has met with indigenous leaders to hear their voices, concerns, and hopes for her presidency.
Sheinbaum won in a landslide with almost 60% of the vote! More than double the votes of the candidate behind her. She is the first president to be elected with Jewish ancestry. Sheinbaums ‘Morena’ party has a majority of representatives in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, allowing Sheinbaum to implement her progressive agenda and plan for the country.
