How many books will fly off the shelves in the United States? Books have been banned left and right in the blink of an eye for some time. These important books for our education are being stripped away from our rights in school libraries. For example, a report created on November 4th, 2024, by “theguardians.com” explains how about 10,000 books were banned from 2023 to 2024. Will we in society finally stop this madness, or will we watch our education be taken from us?
Books have been an essential part of our education for so many years, and they have helped us grow with our imagination, history, and long-term success. But 2021 changed everything; the movement to ban books has put tremendous pressure on schools and students’ rights. According to Banned in the USA: Beyond the Shelves, created by “The Freedom to Read Program” experts, about 43% of books that have been banned were restricted from access to reviews. All of these books with sensitive topics about actual things that can happen or have occurred, such as racism, depression, LGTBQ+, and sexual violence, have to be censored by the government. As Erasmus quotes, “If we want truth, every man ought to be free to say what he thinks without fear.”. All of these books are special to everyone, including the students who aren’t aware of such topics. Taking these books away will restrict their perspectives and the quality of their education. We can speak about anything, including sensitive issues to people without consequences. The whole point of the education system is to read, learn, and think in new ways.
Overview:
PenAmerica provided all this information.
From July 2023 to June 2024, about 10,000 books were censored in 29 states and 220 public school districts. If we include July 2021, it would add up to 15,000 books banned in 43 states. Now, along with book titles, as of 2023-2024, around 4,231 have been banned.
You may know some of these books if you’ve ever read them, such as “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” or even “The Handmaid’s Tale.” All these intelligent authors feel stressed and overwhelmed by all this chaos, fearing their books will be pulled off shelves. The authors who had to go through this event were Ellen Hopkins, who had around 523 book bans, and Sarah J. Mas, who had 481. All this censorship stirred around 2.6k authors, and 6k titles have been affected within the past 3 years in 29 states.
How to Make a Cause:
The best way to take the first step into this huge issue is to inform yourself of this situation, such as books on the edge of being banned. Next is to see if these books help kids learn or grow. Third, find some people with the same opinions as you and form a get-together to discuss these topics. The final step is to learn ways to influence the people and potential allies and inform them about the value of these books. Once you’re finally ready, it’s time to go to school districts and help create a strategy to allow books to stay for the sake of the education system.
