As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, winter sports end, and spring sports begin. Soccer, basketball, boys’ water polo, and wrestling are approaching the end of the season, while spring sports are making their way into the season. Boys and girls’ lacrosse, track and field, softball, baseball, boys’ golf, boys’ volleyball, and swim are all spring sports now beginning this season. Let us dive into how these sports are doing this early in the season at Santiago High School!
To start, the girls’ lacrosse team is doing a fantastic job. With five games in, they have won 4 of them. Beating El Dorado, Portola High School, El Toro, and Canyon, with a close loss against Huntington Beach High School. According to MaxPreps, the team currently has an overall turnover rate of 70% and a total of 59 goals scored already! The team looks forward to their upcoming pre-league games against Chaparral, Corona Del Mar, Edison, Newport Harbor, and Murrieta Mesa, before the first league game against Centennial on Thursday, March 13th. Stay tuned!
Moving on to the boys’ lacrosse team, they are four games into their season. They struggled against teams like Vista Murrieta High School, Canyon, and Temecula Valley but had a close win against Beckman High School, which was their most recent game. With Segerstorm and Tesoro coming up in the first two weeks of March, league games are following closely, with the battle of Rimpau (Centennial) on March 13th as well!
Next is baseball. They have only had two games so far into the spring season: one against Dana Hills High School and the other against El Rancho High School. Both of these games resulted in a Santiago win of 4-1! They are clearly off to a great start. The next few games are against Chino Hills, Santa Fe, Campo Verde, San Juan Hills, and Centennial on the 17th and 18th to mark the first league games. This season is already looking very positive.
Boys’ volleyball has stepped into its season as well. With some rough games against University High School, Yorba Linda High School, and Marina High School, they have managed to get equal wins and losses.MaxPreps says they are currently 4-4, with an upcoming match against Poly High School on March 3rd. A lot of games to go! And look out for their first league match against Centennial on March 6th! https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS5RjKwbNyMxYMKlZk73B_RJdw1skfCQPTLVA&s

The golf team had one close match against Temecula Valley High School, which unfortunately ended in a loss of 198-200. However, there are still 14 matches to go. The next game is against Linfield Christian on March 6th.
While all of these spring sports are beginning, it is essential to note that the girls’ soccer team has made it to CIF and has a good chance of making it to state. They have one last CIF game against Santa Margarita High School on Friday, February 28th. If they win this game, they will proceed to the state! Go and show support.
