Creativity is the reason we have buildings, the light bulb, and even the iPhone. None of these could have happened without creativity. Yes, academics were needed too, but without creativity, it’s nothing but equations on paper. Creativity is just as important as academics because without it, life would lack innovation and color. Academics and creativity combined result in significance.
Academics show people how things work. It tells you equations, physics, how language works, etc. Academics is crucial in order to be creative. It teaches you how society works. When academics meet creativity, that’s when changes can happen. Even in hobbies such as skateboarding. Rodney Mullen, the creator of the Ollie, not only needed to know the physics of how to get the board in the air, but he had to be creative enough to actually do it.
Creativity has been proven to improve your academic performance. Being a part of creative activities like music, art, writing, etc, can improve focus and increase academic success. An article written by Maria Tzachrista describes that, “...higher levels of creativity are linked to improved academic performance”. This makes sense because the more creative you are, the more likely you are to find a solution. Creativity also improves focus. “Focus is an enabler for directed creativity. Creativity tends to fly off in all directions when it starts to flow, so focus will not only give you depth but direction”. Charles Tincknell says. Focus is important for academics because without it, you wouldn’t be able to get things done. This applies to school, but focusing can help you focus on your job and other hobbies. So when you have focus, you can get the creativity to flow.
Without creativity, hundreds of inventions might not have existed today. Items like the light bulb, the automobile, or even your house all happened because of creativity. Think of Thomas Edison. According to “The History of the Light Bulb, “It was a series of small improvements on the ideas of previous inventors that have led to the light bulbs we use in our homes today. This detail shows that Edison created the light bulb by improving previous inventions. He needed creativity to do this. He had to ask himself, “How could I improve this?” Because of his knowledge from academics and his creativity, we have the light bulb.
Innovation requires blending creativity with academics, and innovation is important to solving the world’s problems. Climate change, medical improvements, and other issues require creative vision. For example, if an earthquake caused a bridge to collapse, engineers would need to design a new one. What they would do this time, however, is combine their knowledge of physics and earthquakes and design an even better bridge. The design of the bridge needs creativity.
Creativity is not just something recommended or something to use now and then; it’s essential to life and just about everything you do. You need academics for creativity, and you need creativity for life. The inventions we know today and the hobbies and sports people participate in happened because people were creative. By using both academic knowledge and growing creativity every day, people can solve problems, go towards progress, and ultimately make the world a better place.
