Santiago’s girls’ lacrosse team fought against Los Alamitos, but unfortunately lost 8-6.
First Quarter
In the first quarter, the Santiago Sharks played very strongly. They started by getting up 1-0. They worked together to score a goal while running their offense play called a mob. This play is a wheel that the offensive attackers use, which involves all 4 of them running around the crease and trying to find the open girl to shoot and score. Defensively, during this quarter, they were picking up their players and making sure they were cutting off their passes. Also, during this quarter, their goalie Bella Ball stopped many goals and cleared the ball to her teammates, who got it up the field. At the end of the quarter, it was 3-1. Los Alamitos got a few in.
Second Quarter
During their break period, they discussed what they needed to do better. As they figured things out before returning to the field, they hyped one another up to get excited to get those goals back. As this quarter started offensively, they were making a lot of attempted shots on their goal, but Alamitos’s goalie was stopping them. As the goalie cleared it out to their teammates, the Santiago Sattack was redefining the ball and winning it back by double-teaming their players. This helped the offense slow down and take a second to get a play going. They scored 1 goal, and it helped them get excited. At this point, it was 2-3. As for defense, the defense was marking as best as they could; they were winning ground balls and getting them back up to the offense. Just a couple of mistakes led Los Alamitos to take the lead. At the end of this quarter, it was 4-2.
Third Quarter
As they were at halftime, their coach reviewed strategies and techniques to start putting some points on the board. The girls began to get very hyped up and excited to do this. They had a very loud, cheery halftime and were fired up to go back on and score some goals. As they approached the field, the offense had the ball for most of this quarter. They were trying to put as much pressure on their defense to score. They were able to get 1 goal in during that quarter. The girls were fighting hard to win the draw and trying to fight for the ground ball. They were then put in a Man-down situation and had to run a zone on defense. As the Santiago defense was playing very well in the zone by passing off players to one another, the Alamitios offense only scored 1 goal that quarter. At the end of this quarter, it was 3-5.
Fourth Quarter
This was Santiago’s last break of the game. They had to be fired up and want this win. They came into the 4th period fired up. They were winning a lot of draws and drawing fouls to get shots on the keeper.R. Santiago Offesne ended up scoring a goal. The score was now -6. Santiago’s team was fired. They were defending very well on defense. The defense was winning many of the ground balls, which helped bring the ball up the field to the defense. Santiago’s offense ended up scoring again, making it 6-6. They were fired up. They were doing everything they could to win this game. Unfortunately, in the last 2 minutes of the game, Los Alamitos scored two goals. As this happened, the Santiago offense was doing everything possible to win. They were trying to hype one another but lost 6-8.
Unfortunately, the Santiagos girls didn’t win this game, but they still played as a team and hyped one another up. They were telling one another a good match after the game, which really showcased the team connections even when things didn’t go their way. We should be proud of our Santiagos Girls Lacrosse Team and the hard work they have put in.
