Even though The Last of Us season 2 has not been fully released, a season 3 for the series has been announced. This information was released on April 13th, 2025. This was unexpected, given that there are only two games in the franchise. The first season of The Last of Us came out in 2023 to positive reviews. According to Variety, ¨While the first season adapted the acclaimed 2013 Sony PlayStation game of the same title, the game’s sequel, 2020’s “The Last of Us Part II,” is so massive that creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann always planned to split its events into multiple seasons. In an interview with Variety about the seven-episode Season 2, Mazin said that he felt the series had “one or two more seasons” before reaching the end of “Part II. It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets bigger,” he said. “You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.” The story of The Last of Us follows the two protagonists, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as they navigate a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested America to deliver the cure for the infection. On the way, they encounter many obstacles, bonding over them and growing closer because of it. “To see ‘The Last of Us’ brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” said Druckmann, who was the writer and creative director of the games. “Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions.” It is heavily speculated that the main reason The Last of Us is getting a third season in the franchise is that the
second game is longer than the first. The story is overall much longer than the first, so it’s mostly fitting that it might be split into multiple parts. It might even be possible that a Season 4 could be in the works for the franchise. While the first season adapted the acclaimed 2013 Sony PlayStation game of the same title, the game’s sequel, 2020’s “The Last of Us Part II,” is so massive that creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann always planned to split its events into multiple seasons. In an interview with Variety about the seven-episode Season 2, Mazin said that he felt the series had “one or two more seasons” before reaching the end of “Part II. In a further statement with the renewal announcement, Mazin said, “We approached Season 2 to create something we could be proud of. The results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.” The creators have a goal to expand upon the story of the games. That might even include adding new content that’s only for the show. We have already seen an example of this in the battle against the infected at the town of Jackson in the second episode of the second season. So we’ll have to see what the creators have in store for extending or even adding new parts to the story.
