Santiago High School: the home of scholars, achievers, and – most prominently – champions. Santiago’s fall sports have made their mark on the 2013 season as numerous athletic teams fight their way to and through the CIF playoffs.
Varsity football will enter their first CIF playoff game Friday, Nov. 15. Before playoffs, the team will face off against Norco High School Nov. 7 in order to determine the second place team to qualify. The football seniors will be honored at the game for “Senior Night” as their families will escort the players onto their field for the last time.
The undefeated Girls’ Volleyball team will enter into the CIF playoffs with a winning record of 34-0. After their 3-0 victories against Norco on Nov. 4, the league champions boasted their title as first in the CIF division of California and 11th in the entire nation.
“It’s a great feeling going in undefeated,” said senior team member Sydney Freeman, “We’re held to high expectations so we have to keep up with them. We are just practicing hard and taking each game one by one.”
Boys’ Water Polo won league title in their game against Martin Luther King Wednesday, Nov. 6. The 2013 Big VIII Champions overcame their rival in a live game that ended 11-10.
Friday, Nov. 8 Girls’ Tennis will enter into their second round in the CIF playoffs after their defeat of Long Beach Wilson. After they defeated Laguna Hills High School, the defending 2012 CIF Champions, Santiago entered into the playoffs as a wild card team, consequently beating Long Beach Wilson 11-7.
Girls’ Golf enters into their second round of playoffs Thursday, Nov.7; the team defends their title as league champions, and plans to make their way to the CIF Championship round.
Cross Country’s qualifying race on Nov. 7 will determine whether or not the team will make the 2013 playoffs. Both the boys and girls will compete against the other teams in the league for the top three spots that will move on to CIF. Previously, the boys’ team has averaged around fourth place in their races, while girls’ ranges anywhere from fourth to fifth place.
“Today is a definitive race,” remarked Cory Mitchell, senior and one of the team captains.
