What if you could relive the Harry Potter saga at Hogwarts? The moment we’ve all been waiting for: a true TV series that will represent many of the missing pieces from the books. The series that touched our hearts and brought out the spark of magic in us. The books that, even now, we’ll go back to relive those carefree and magical moments of our childhood. Harry Potter, the boy who lived in our hearts as we grew up.
The Television Series Announcement
Deadline News wrote that the announcement was made, “At its Max streaming event in April 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a new era is coming for Harry Potter fans. The company announced a TV series based on all seven books about the boy wizard written by J.K. Rowling”(Tapp). Harry Potter would be beginning a new era. Movie web wrote that in June 2025, Warner Bros announced that instead of being streamed on Max Original, it would be an HBO original. This announcement will have stacked the show to be on the same level as The Game of Thrones, Succession, etc. It was revealed on December 12, 2024, that the Harry Potter television series would begin filming near the end of the summer of 2025. On July 14, 2025, the show started filming at Warner Bros Studios, Leavesden.

Fans’ Reactions
In April 2025, many of the Harry Potter fans had mixed reactions. Some were excited about the new angle and fresh start for the original saga. For example, Hello magazine wrote about fans who were excited and “celebrated the news by commenting: ‘A true wizard in the making,’ as well as…‘This will be HBO’s biggest show ever’”(Allen). Although many were ecstatic about the new adaptation, others claimed that the movies did not need to be redone as a television series. Parade news expressed that fans who were not ecstatic claimed, ‘This photo confirms the reboot is so unnecessary. It’s basically the same.’ said one user. ‘There is just one Harry to me, sorry. This series is so unnecessary.’ wrote another (Galante). The not-so-thrilled crowd did not desire another look at the books. Once the picture of the new Harry Potter actor was posted, fans expressed that it was a copy and paste of Daniel Radcliffe, the original actor for the movies.
Cast Announcements
On May 27th, 2025, the main character, Harry Potter, aka the boy who lived, was unveiled to be played by Dominic McLaughlin. Arabella Stanton was cast as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout is playing the role of Ron Weasley. The Golden Trio is back. They will be joined by John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Eisedu as Professor Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell. The cast is growing slowly but steadily, with more and more actors and actresses being added throughout the months.

Directors and Writers
HBO Max has Mark Mylod as a director for many of the episodes to come. As a showrunner and writer, Francesca Gardiner will be taking up a role in developing the show. These two are Emmy winners for HBO’s Succession.
JK Rowling will be involved as well; She is a creative producer and is overseeing the casting and making sure the writing stays true to her books.
When is it planned to be released?
It has been said that the series will debut in 2027 on HBO as well as HBO Max. The show is meant to have more scenes from the books than the movies did. Each season is supposedly equal to one book, and it has been confirmed by Adriano Goldman, the lead director of photography, that there will be eight episodes in the first season.
From what we have heard, the HBO Max Harry Potter TV series appears to be a fresh start for the wizarding world. According to the Deadline newspaper, the fans will attain a thorough translation of the anthology. Though the movies were excellent, many of the fans are excited for a new outlook and production. This series will be a turning point for Harry Potter fans.
