A Rise In Censorship In America

With the Election of Donald Trump, Are Outlets Being Politically Alienated?

In a country where the First Amendment is amplified more than ever, why is there a fear over an opinion? In a new world for many, opinions are being censored more than ever. This comes after the Donald Trump Administration has been censoring many media and publications.

In a post made by Donald Trump on 9/23, he states on Truth Social. (This app he created came about after he was banned from major sites following the Jan 6th attack on the US Capitol):

“The White House was told by ABC that his show was taken off the air. The Last time I went after them, they gave me 16 million dollars- puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE”

When I opened the app to see his post and created an account for TruthSocial made by Donald Trump, I clicked on the following, it has an automated following to every Republican in his House along with him, Donald Trump himself, and other Republican outlets (Election Wizard, DC Enquirer) In the app when you would normally see posts on any app its called “truths” instead of posts. The app’s description is described as “We welcome varied opinions and robust conversations that come with their opinion.”

This app comes in heavily after the 2024 Presidential Election, with over 5 million active users in the United States. After spending hours on the app to see if anything had changed on my feed, unsurprisingly, nothing changed. The app feels as though you are in a MAGA realm where everyone else’s opinion is wrong.

The app I was on was also one of the most biased apps I have ever been on, unsprisingly, with many outlets deeming this as well, even before Donald Trump won the 2024 Presidential Election.

Disney/Randy Holmes

After the Jimmy Kimmel show was unfairly cancelled, more than 400 celebrities, including Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston, and Tom Hanks, signed the ACLU’s letter condemning Disney’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Following the condemnation, several democratic lawmakers, including Elizabeth Warren, launched an investigation into Nexstar and Sinclair after the show was cancelled.

Following the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sinclair announced that they would end the preemption of the show. This comes after Disney (partnered with Sinclair) lost over 3.7 billion US dollars following the announcement of the cancellation. After bringing the show back, Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue became the most-watched ever on YouTube. It has currently reached 22M in just 6 days.

Censorship of Jimmy Kimmel is not working in favor of the Donald Trump Administration. The Administration is working more extensively to censor various aspects of American life. One of them is TikTok.
President Trump announced that the investors of TikTok will all be on the board. “All very well-known people, very famous people actually, financially.” “It’s also controlled by very powerful and very substantial American people, all American by the way, all American people”.

The Trump Administration sought to regain American control in this deal, with TikTok being used by 170 million users in the US. Karoline Leavitt also added that the US government will “maintain” control of the app’s algorithm. With this information coming about, President Trump also had stated previously on 9/18, “I have read someplace that networks were 97 percent against me, I get 97 percent negative, and yet I won and easily”. This was in reference to him winning the 2024 presidential election. Trump furthered on “They give me only bad publicity, press, I mean, they’re getting a license,” He finished it with “I would think maybe their license should be taken away.”

On 9/29, following several remarks of censorship from the Trump Administration, Bruce Springsteen (Rock singer known for making Born in the U.S.A) stated at a New York Film Festival with the heavy setament “America as battered as she feels right now, continues to be a land of hopes and dreams not fear or divisiveness or government censorship, or hatred-that America is worth fighting for.”

As attempts at political alienation in America rise increasingly, will Americans recognize the wrongness of this on either side of the political spectrum? Does the worst need to happen to an outlet or a person for people to wake up and take notice? With only nine months into Donald Trump’s presidency, I hope America wakes up.
