Friday Jan. 17 “Ride Along” – what could be the funniest movie of 2014 – rolled into theaters, dominating box offices as the number one film in both Top Sellers and Top 10 Box Office movies.
Starring as an unlikely cop-and-wannabe duo, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart take on the lead roles in this action-comedy film. As a known tough guy that plays by his own rules, Ice Cube is the perfect man to play a lone wolf Atlanta police detective. With Hart playing the rookie cop who has aspirations of being a lieutenant, you can expect him to keep his motor mouth oiled and going. The two characters have contradicting personalities and are polar opposites, making these two actors a perfect cop-and-rookie partnership.
Ben Barber (Hart), a high school security guard, and hard-core video game enthusiast, is engaged to Angela Payton, played by Tika Sumpter. Sumpter’s acting as the sister of James (Ice Cube) was unconvincing whenever he was not in the scene. Playing as the partners of James, John Leguizamo and Bryan Callen seemed to have the same issue as Sumpter, which continued even when Ice Cube was with them. Although some of these supporting actors couldn’t fully depict their characters, Ice Cube and Hart made up for them and consequently stole the show. In a way, Ice Cube carried on the mood and plot of the movie at certain points while Hart supplied the comedy.
Director Tim Story probably didn’t intend for the film to be so nonsensical, but with Hart what can you expect? Hart’s clowning around made his character seem more of a rookie with each fret and misstep he made. Story effectively choreographed the ridiculousness of Hart against Ice Cube’s mayhem without sacrificing the reputation of the film.
