With Santiago’s Sock Hop to Sadie’s dance fast approaching, many Santiago females and their dates are undecided on what they want to wear to fit the theme. When we think about the 1950s, the movie “Grease” automatically comes to mind.
“I think there will definitely be outfits such as poodle skirts, leather jackets and big glasses,” commented ASB member EJ Castillo (12).
These looks would include the classic Pink Ladies and the iconic Greasers decked out in the typical ensemble pictured throughout the movie. Of course, girls could follow Sandy’s pre-vamped out wardrobe and wear the traditional poodle skirt and blouse with white tennis shoes and bobby socks.
“I think we’re going to have lots of the good vs. bad of the 50’s,” said ASB President Rio DosSantos (12). “But I also think there will be to Greaser/Rockabilly vs. Preppy looks.”
Also, with some of the popular celebrities of the 50’s such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and James Dean, many students can use these icons to find other takes on the rocking decade. For a more fancy approach, females can model after celebrity Audrey Hepburn (known for her lead role in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”). In the movie, Hepburn sports a classy black dress, accessorized with silver jewels and black satin gloves to match.
Other outfit choices include: matching bowling shirts, rolled up skinny jeans with tight stiped shirts, and common casual wear of the era. Students can also take their costume from the movie “The Outsiders” and dress up like one of the ‘Socs,’ which is an upper class, preppy group. This looks involves preppy collegiate wear in addition to high fashion denim.
Jeans and jackets can be found at Tilly’s for a decent price, and Payless also has plain white tennis shoes. Most of these outfits can be found online, with the more Grease-style costumes located at Party City in the Crossings. While complete outfits can be found online, it may be cheaper to hunt for the pieces individually. More authentic items and accessories can be purchased at local thrift stores.
