In a game that would be decided by the final shot, the Santiago Boys Varsity Basketball team finally secured a victory in league play during their trip to Norco where they took on the Cougars for the final game of the season. The tense game concluded with a score of 59-57 with a stupendous finish from the Sharks who were able to route the Cougars both defensively and offensively.
The Sharks secured an early lead with a score of 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, however, the cougars would cut the lead to 27-25 at the end of the first half.
The start of the third quarter signaled a change in offensive tempo for Santiago as attacking the basket had proven to be a viable option in exploiting Norco’s lack of defensive finesse under the paint. The rough and ragged style of offensive play by the Sharks would stretch the lead to 49-40 at the end of the third, one of the largest leads Santiago had secured in league play this season.
Norco would answer back in the fourth with a run that would bring it to a one or two possession game for the final minutes. A basket from Cougar guard Alonzo Woolridge (12) would bring Norco to their first lead of the game at 55-53 with 1:36 left to play.
Santiago guard Matt Herring (12) would immediately match the basket with a 3 point play reaped from inside the paint. Roosevelt would sink two free throws at the line on the next play. Shark Paul Vilela (9) would be sent to the line with 1.9 sec left on the clock where he sank one shot. The cougars would advance the ball dangerously close to half court however the subsequent shot attempt failed.
