CAT’s accurate performance of Disney’s “High School Musical” blew audiences away with their powerful duets and breath-taking solos. Santiago’s own students Tiereny Lumary (Sharpay Evans), Robert Delpino, Jr (Chad Danforth), Jessica James (Ms. Darbus), and many others helped showcase a fantastic performance.
“High School Musical” is a story about two star-crossed lovers who break the status quo by entering their school musical ‘Juliet and Romeo’. Tory Bolton (Andreas Schmidt) is the star basketball player at East High School, home of the energetic Wildcats. Troy meets bookworm and math enthusiast Gabriella Montez (Carissa Coronado) at a ski resort during their Winter Break. The two fall in love after singing karaoke on New Year’s Eve.
Unexpectedly, Gabriella moves to Albuquerque and yet again meets Tory. Bumping into thespians Sharpay Evans and her twin brother Ryan (Gavin Gray), the two realized that Troy and Gabriella are a threat to their potential stardom in the school musical they find a way to make Tory and Gabriella have other commitments on the day of the auditions. Chad Danforth, one of Troy’s basketball buds, and Taylor McKessie (Kaitlin Poole), Gabriella’s brainiac- bestie, must set their differences aside to help their friends in their time of need. With clever songs such as: “Stick to the Status Quo”, “Bop to the Top”, and “We’re All in This Together”, makes CAT’s “High School Musical” a great family outing.
My partner and I both agree that the execution of the performance was in a whole, great. All of the cast members got into their characters and put deep thought into their own characters persona. Even though some of the actors fell in-and-out of character they still persevered and continued on. Though limited with space, set design and choreography shined. The actors who portrayed Troy and Gabriella had the audience seem that they were almost in love.
Before the show started, however, you saw arms and legs on the edge of the wings, which ruined the sense of professionalism. CAT should have also stuck to the original basketball numbers. Tory, instead of wearing number 14, was wearing a number 6.
There were some stuttering of lines, but they recovered quickly and continued the show. Some of the transitions were a bit slow, and made the show seem to drag.
Despite the hiccups, CAT’s “High School Musical” is a must-see. Show times include, March 8 at 2:00p.m. and 7:00p.m. as well as on March 9 at 2:00p.m.
