On August 29, 2014 the Santiago varsity football team battled in a non-conference game against the Redlands Terriers. In this first game of the season, held at Santiago High School, the Sharks were victorious, winning 47-21.
The Santiago Sharks came into the game with high expectations with coach Jeff Steinberg and senior quarterback Blake Barnett (12). The Sharks were also trying to bounce back from season ending playoff loss to Upland last season.
The game started with only one drive for each team and in these drives Redlands was able to score 6 and make the pat. The Sharks however had a quick 3 and out drive ending the first quarter 7-0 Redlands.
To start the second quarter the Sharks began with a lead against Redlands offense and later the Sharks scored with a couple of runs including an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Again the Sharks had a stop forcing a punt, but on a quick drive down the field the senior quarterback Barnett threw an interception. In a quick turnaround drive Redlands scored. The Sharks answered with a two-minute drive and a 20-yard rushing touchdown but they missed the pat making the score 14-13 Redlands.
The Sharks start the half with a 13-yard touchdown pass from senior Barnett and a fumble recovery on the next drive. The next drive the Sharks scored again with a 13-yard rushing touchdown and then came back with a stop on 4th and goal. At the end of the third quarter the scoreboard read 26 -14.
The sharks had a great fourth quarter of football, which started with a fumble recovery and a drive that took less than 5 plays lead to a 4-yard rushing touchdown for Barnett. Both teams were forced to punt on the next drives. Then the sharks got another rushing touchdown and again forced a punt. On their last drives both teams had big rushing touchdowns including a 38-yard rushing touchdown by the backup quarterback #2. At the end of the game, the scoreboard read 47-21 for a Santiago Shark victory.
This win gave Santiago a record of 1-0 and gave Redlands a 0-1 record. This win also means that the Santiago sharks are the only team to have won in Corona so far.
