Saturday, October 25 Santiago’s Cross Country team competed in the world’s largest cross-country competition, the Mt. Sac Invitational held at Mt. San Antonio College. Our Sharks battled against thousands of other athletes, on what many regard as the most challenging cross-country race course, for a chance to make history. As expected, Santiago did not leave empty handed.
Not daring to break the emerging pattern this season, the Freshmen Girls’ team took first in their heat once again. Top-notch runner Sophie Grisey (9) took second place individually with her teammate Shae Corcoran (9) following close behind in third.
Andrea Godsey (12) also found the spotlight when she took 4th individually in the JV Girls’ race later that day. The JV ladies managed to take 3rd out of the 13 schools in their race.
The Sophmore Girls were entered in the Sweepstakes race and took a respectable 4th place overall in their heat. Diana Heath (10), who had only recently returned from a hamstring injury, took 12th out of the 151 racers.
Not only did our Sharks collect a bounty of medals that day, they also received free products from popular sponsors, such as Gatorade and Brooks. Countless booths crowded the open space next to the track, selling everything from running gear to fruit smoothies.
Needless to say, the athletes thoroughly enjoyed the event, both on and off the course.
