Santiago High school’s theatre production class is embarking upon an epic journey to produce a Broadway style musical. “13” centers on a boy name Evan Goldman, a 12 year old Jewish New Yorker, who is trying to plan the perfect Bar Mitzvah in the midst of “becoming a man.” Out of the blue his parents divorce and he is forced to move with his mom to Appleton, Indiana, where he meets an outcast named Patrice who dubs the town as “the lamest place in the world.” She shows him the ropes as he begins to re-plan his life-changing party. However, when the first day of school comes he ignores Patrice once he finds out how low on the food chain of high school she really is. At school, he meets a plethora of oddball characters: Kendra the good girl, Brett the heartthrob, Lucy the bad girl, Archie the cripple, and more. Labels are one of the most defining things for young teens and this musical shows how they can hurt and help on the journey to becoming 13.
The first round of auditions for the Santiago production took place on Thursday, January 29th where 38 hopefuls auditioned. However when the callback list was posted, there were only 24 names on the list. Out of those 24, three will be followed on the road to opening night: Rosie Perez (11), Flo Schinoff (12), and Natalie Iacobellis (12).
Rosie Perez is shooting for the role of Lucy, a power house bad girl who will seize every ‘’opportunity” that she can get her hands on. Rosie has been a part of the theatre program for her entire high school career and is overjoyed to have made callbacks where she feels she can show off her skills.
Flo Schinoff is vying for the role of good girl Kendra, because she is very girly and a major dance role. She is most excited for the big group numbers and looks forward to getting close with the cast. She is thrilled to be invited to call backs.
Natalie Iacobellis is auditioning for the roles of both Kendra and Lucy. This would be her first production with Santiago’s theatre department. She auditioned because she wanted to show people that she was capable of doing it.
Congratulations to the chosen few. This promises to be an exciting production.
