Best Buddies held its annual prom on Friday, February 27 at the Orange Convention Center in San Bernadino, where buddies from different chapters could meet and dance the night away together. The event consisted of fun, food, music, and laughter, and was an obvious hit from the looks of undeniable amusement on the buddies’ faces.
Upon arrival, guests quickly filled the dance floor and erupted to the songs of Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, and One Direction. Memories were captured by the numerous photographers snapping photos of sparkly dresses and crisp suits, and the smiles of those adorning them.
“Best Buddies is an unforgettable experience that can change the perspective of someone’s life. It gives someone the opportunity to enjoy and have fun with their buddy and make it a night to remember” says Chris Perez (12).
One of the drawbacks of this event, however, is the lack of publicity for it, resulting in a smaller number of participants than one would hope for. From a school of over three thousand students, only a small handful of people showed up to the dance.
As a member of Best Buddies, I see events such as these as a vital part of fulfilling the club’s purpose. The organization was created to establish a friendly campus where disabled students feel included and involved. With Best Buddies Prom, students are given the opportunity to step in and contribute to the organization’s mission in a fun environment free of tension. Tickets are available to students of all high school grade levels unlike Prom’s availability to only Juniors and Seniors, allowing for the attendance of more people. In addition, this night is planned specifically for the organization, making it less intimidating for buddies who are uncomfortable with the Santiago Prom.
