The movie “In the Heart of the Sea” directed by Ron Howard is the story of Thomas Nickerson’s amazing adventure and what he encountered on his over one year long journey across the ocean. Nickerson opens up about his experience when an aspiring author knocks on his door, wishing to write about his experience. At first, Nickerson is reluctant but he soon decides to share his story, and his amazing tale begins.
The movie itself had a great direction, but was unable to carry through. There are many scenes with spectacular acting, however there are just as many with bad acting. Throughout the movie there are various scenes in which certain moments are acted out in an overdramatic way. However the actors do manage to get their point across, and who they stand with. Aside from the acting the special effects for the whales and storms where very well done, but the camera shots were a little much. Most of the movie takes place in the ocean, so of course to add more realism to the movie watching experience they made the camera shots shaky. Which was fine at first but after a while it was annoying. Chris Hemsworth, playing Owen Chase, did a wonderful job in the film as his normal tough man lead, but he was not enough to carry the film. The music did tie in well enough with the events, but it wasn’t as memorable as some movies music.
As far as ratings go it did not go very well, scoring only a 50% on Metacritic, a 42% on rotten tomatoes, and a 7.3 on IMDB. Overall the film did not go as well as expected, and portrayed itself as epic tale of adventure but unfortunately did not deliver.
