Barbie, it’s about time!! As of yesterday, toymaker Mattel released new Barbies with not just one, but several different looks. The toy company made three body types: curvy, petite, and tall; they also made their dolls more ethnically diverse.
“We were hearing that many thought that Barbie was out of touch,” Mattel SVP and global brand general manager, Evelyn Mazzocco, said in an interview.
“It would be more of a risk if we don’t continue to evolve Barbie… she’s got to evolve with the times,” Mattel president and COO Richard Dickson also said.
And it’s true. Modern culture and society have changed so much during the years that the “tall, blonde, skinny, and pretty” guidelines are somewhat invalid now. To be beautiful is to be yourself; it’s not what a plastic doll tells you to be through subtext. And I’m pretty sure a lot of girls out there would enjoy the benevolence that Mattel has made to make them feel better about themselves both inside and out.
Although I wasn’t a big Barbie fan when I was younger, I too enjoy this major step that Mattel is taking to celebrate the diversity that girls (and boys) both big and small are living in today.
