One big debate happening right now is whether graffiti is vandalism or art? There are young passionate graffiti artists that express themselves through art. However, there are also some young artists who abuse this form of expression and use graffiti as a sign to promote either themselves or certain gang groups. This is one reason why graffiti is a hot topic as being are or vandalism.
“What is vandalism to begin with and who are we to say how people should brighten up the world?” asked Amy King, a junior at a high school in Orange County. If people are using graffiti with inspirational art or quotes, it is inspiration on the wall and should be considered art. This kind of art inspires people.
However, if certain individuals use it to promote unhealthy subject matters, such as drugs, gangs, and any other illegal crime, then it should be considered vandalism. People should not be allowed to deface public property for the sake of promoting their affiliations, because they are giving graffiti a bad reputation. Many graffiti artists are extremely talented and they deserve positive recognition for their work.
“Art is art colorful and beautiful. It brightens up buildings and makes them more welcoming,” said Kayla Berheny (11). Many communities are run down and portrayed as “ghetto,” however, when graffiti artists are allowed to show the true positive side of the city, it will bring a more welcoming vibe as well as let young adolescents see that there are better, more effective things to do with your time.
