Cross Country: Goodbye Big 8, Hello CIF

Kayli Jester, Editor in Chief

For many of us, November 1 marked the beginning of the chaotic scramble to get those UC applications in the bag. For Santiago’s Cross Country team, however, the day marked the final day of the 2016 Big 8 League Season- and what a day it was.

After a bit of a rocky spell, Sharks were only cautiously optimistic as they returned to Andulka Park for the League Championships. No matter, the results spoke for themselves.

The JV Girls defended their title as League Champions for the third year running, with freshmen Sydnee Edmonds (9) snatching first place by three seconds after a heroic sprint against King’s Ashley Haring (9) in the last 100 meters. Eight of our JV Girls received medals for placing in the top 21 in the 92-girl race.

The JV Boys took fourth as a team. Jared Neiman-Macak (10) was the sole medal earner for Santiago in that race, coming in 14th place individually.

The Varsity Boys ended their season on a higher note. Only the top three teams in each varsity race may move on to CIF, and our Sharks barely missed the window, coming in at fourth place. While they did not qualify for CIF as a team, Marcos Milla (11) and Kyle Pendleton (11) qualified for CIF as individuals.

On the other hand, Varsity Girls not only qualified for CIF as a team, but took second place overall in their race and six of their seven girls earned special patches for their placement in the top 21. Not too shabby, eh?

Hopes are high for Santiago’s final battle at CIF. Those competing at the next level will continue to practice with Head Coach Etheridge while the rest of the team rests up for Track Season.

Once again, congratulations to the runners moving on to CIF. We wish you the best of luck. Go Sharks!
