Should Teachers Give Homework Over Break?

Annie Swierczek, Staff Writer

Holiday breaks are single handedly the most anticipated part of the school year for most students at Santiago High School. The excitement  of being able to sleep in, hangout with  friends anytime, and most of all, no homework. But there are always the teachers that insist on assigning a time-consuming project or piles of worksheets.  So the question begs, should this be allowed?

There are many ranging opinions if assigning homework over the break is right or wrong. There is the strong argument used by teachers that over-the-break assignments is to make up for all the time we will not be in school. This is understandable as it seems fairly simple to forget everything learned prior to the break. Giving work over break is an effective method to keep the material fresh in the minds of students. Other ways to prevent this is to begin a new lesson to not have to worry about students forgetting material.

Projects over break consume all the time that was supposed to be used for leisure and almost make the break dreadful at times. School work should be left for school and break is a meant for taking time off from the stress that school provokes.

School work should be prohibited from holiday breaks because the importance of family and having a healthy break from stress is what teachers should be more concerned with.
