The 59th Annual Grammy Awards
February 22, 2017
Last Sunday night, February 12, 2017, marked the 59th annual Grammy Awards, awarding several breakthrough artists, both old and new, for their contributions to the music industry. While the Grammy’s are highly praised for singers, players and composers, this year’s Grammy Awards incorporated various controversial, memorable and nostalgic moments everyone was able to enjoy.
Though the Grammy’s are heavily advocated to be non-political, it seemed this year was a little bit of an exception. Despite the incognito mentions from artists (towards the government and president), everything was tame enough for people to respect. Katy Perry for example, performed at this year’s award show, and while the crowd was thoroughly enjoying her performance, her finale was very compassionate, with the American Constitutions first words projecting on and behind her while she shouted “No hate!” to the crowd.
Memorable, loving moments like these are what unite many musicians together, and Katy Perry was no exception. While politics were quickly set aside, many artists took to the stage to commemorate the fallen singers during the year of 2016. From Prince, to George Michael, the entire award show seemed to mention their accomplishments throughout the night.
Adele, winning 5 Grammy titles that night, had the opportunity to sing in honor of George Michael’s passing, almost choking up on her first try. The audience, as well as the people at home, watched with admiration as she sang one of his top hit songs.
Let’s not forget Beyoncé’s ethereal performance as well. Pregnant with twins, she managed to put on an amazing show for the audience, leaving the crowd in awe. Beyoncé left the Grammy’s that night winning 2 Grammy titles.
Along with Beyoncé and Adele, some other artists that won that night included Chance the Rapper, Twenty One Pilots, Drake, The Chainsmokers and even David Bowie for his song Blackstar.
Overall, this year’s Grammy Awards were both significantly impacted and memorable, for all the new artists breaking through, and all the listeners of old and new music.
