Adidas Launches It’s Ocean Plastic Shoes

Adidas, the shoe brand that everyone knows and loves, is switching it up with their new line of shoes made from recycled ocean plastic.

Adidas partnered with Parley for the Oceans, a non-profit organization, in order to help raise awareness about the tons of waste each year that get dumped into our beloved ocean. Made with 95% of this waste, the athletic shoes are lightweight and extremely durable, perfect for any athlete. The sea green pattern that appears on the shoe is constructed from a myriad of fishing line/gill netting that has been carelessly disposed of in the ocean. This year, Adidas estimates that over 1 million pairs will be sold, which is the equivalent to 11 million plastic bottles. This means that every pair produced will be constructed out of 11 plastic bottles, along with recycled polyester and other recyclable materials currently polluting our oceans.

Unfortunately, nearly 8 million tons of plastic have claimed the ocean as it’s property. To date, there are about 5.25 trillion miscellaneous pieces of plastic polluting the ocean. Not only does this affect our seas, but the wide variety of creatures and plants that reside and thrive there. Although the shoes are priced a little high at $200, they are well worth it, for a good-sized portion of that money is donated to help preserve our oceans. Runners can now promote and advertise these shoes, while simultaneously showing their support for generating a better tomorrow for both the ocean and marine life.

Instead of keeping this idea to themselves, Adidas hopes to inspire other companies to do just the same. The company and Parley for the Oceans hopes to recruit others to assist in the fight to improve and to preserve our environment. Together, these two establishments have worked tirelessly, dedicating themselves to creating a better world for both our waters and the creatures whom call the ocean home.
