High school is expensive. Not necessarily the classes but the supplies and tasks and future hangouts with your friends suddenly becomes a game of chance between whether or not you’ve got five bucks in your pocket or ten cents.

You’d ask your parents, and sure, maybe that works sometimes, but wouldn’t it be better if you could make your own money and treat yourself once in a while?

While high school is usually a tough time to go scavenging for potential jobs, here’s a list of possible things that could actually help while you’re searching for a great way to make some bucks.

1. Get yourself a work permit: If you really want to get a job and work legally, you need one of those permits my friend. They’re easy to find at the counselor’s office. Once you get them, have your parents sign them, your employer sign them (once you get hired) and then, turn it right back into the counselor’s office. Simple as that.
2. Apply in person, rather than online: Yes, sometimes the only way to apply for a certain job is online, but, going into the workplace and asking for an application yourself gives the workers a good impression of you.
3. Find jobs local: This one is straightforward. Find jobs that you can easily commute to and from. If you drive a car, then you’re welcome to find jobs a little farther away, but if not, you should consider the walking distance.
4. Check the age count: Some jobs are exclusive to 15-year-olds, some for 16, and some must be 18 and up. Make sure you look up this information before applying.
5. Think of your possible work schedule: If you’re in high school, you’re pretty much booked all week. Make sure that you specify on your application what time you’d most likely be willing to start; thus giving you some space to work on homework or study for the test.
6. Have fun with this: You’re only in high school once, so don’t stress if you don’t get hired on the spot. It takes time and patience. If you get hired, don’t forget to stay humble and have fun with it.
