Santiago vs Centennial- The Story Behind Our School Rivalry
September 1, 2017
As all Sharks know, Centennial and Santiago have always been rivals – but why? Who doesn’t like who to be exact? Do all of the students at both schools share the same feeling of prejudice and rivalry? Let’s jump in and see for ourselves.
The football team at Santiago has always lost to Centennial’s football team. Football is a very popular sport here, and losing is not taken very lightly. This most likely left the football team here at Santiago feeling a bit bitter. There’s always a story behind everything. Our football team has lost to the Huskey’s since 1996 (who knows – maybe this year we will finally win!). The hatred between both schools is so great because of the close distance between our two schools. With Santiago on upper Rimpau and Centennial on lower Rimpau, there seems to be a battle of the territory as well as over who is the better school. That makes things even more personal. Jazz Myerly (Santiago coach) and John Myerly (Centennial coach) are both brothers but are “… on opposite sides of the ball” (Unknown). Being family and on different sides will surely have some tension as sharp as Matt Bomer’s jawline! That just added fuel to the hopefully ending fire. The same question is always asked every year, “Will the football team this year beat the Huskey’s?”. But if you ask around the school, you will see that many of the students don’t really care about the rivalry. Some will ask, “Who cares?” or “Does it matter?”. It seems as though the rivalry is primarily between both school’s sport’s teams.

So interesting. I never knew the real reason behind the rivalry.
