Rewind: Top 5 Movies of the Summer

Summer 2017 was a prime time for quality movie premieres. All sorts of films were released that focused anywhere from superheroes, to women, to history, and everything in between. Though there were a few flops, like “The Emoji Movie” with a whopping rating of 8%, there were quite a few great block-busters that made their way into theaters. In case you weren’t able to catch one of these flicks as they premiered, here is a recap of the top 5 movies of the summer:
1. Spider-Man: Homecoming
- Fan rating: 90%
- Rotten Tomatoes: 92%
- This sequel to the classic Spider-Man series brought a fresh new face from across the pond all the way to the big screen. Tom Holland, who made his first debut in the Marvel world as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War,returns for more action. The movie begins as Parker is escorted home by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and told to lay low until the Avengers need him again. Of course, Parker struggles with this as he craves to be a hero once more, eventually finding his chance as a new villain (Michael Keaton) strikes.
2. Wonder Woman

- Rotten Tomatoes: 92%
- On an isolated island where she was initially trained to be an Amazon warrior, Diana (Gal Gadot) meets a stranded American pilot (Chris Pine). After hearing about the conflict occurring in the outside world, Diana is determined to help. She leaves home for the first time, leading her to unlock her full potential as Wonder Woman.
3. Baby Driver

- Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
- A young man named Baby, played by Ansel Elgort, stumbles into some illegal business in order to repay a crime boss (Kevin Spacey). Due to Baby’s talent for driving, his boss forces him to act as a getaway driver for all of the crimes he schedules. Baby is determined to get out of the business once his debt is paid, but he runs into more trouble as he meets a new love interest.
4. Girl’s Trip

- Rotten Tomatoes: 88%
- When Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall) gets the chance to travel to New Orleans to make a business deal, she decides to invite her three best friends from college: Sasha Franklin (Queen Latifah), Lisa Cooper (Jada Pinkett-Smith), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish). Reunited, “The Flossy Posse” go on a big adventure where the four friends rekindle their wild sides, their issues, and most importantly, their sisterhood.
5. Dunkirk
- Fan rating: 83%
- Rotten Tomatoes: 93%
- The historical story behind the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk, a French city, is brought to life by director Christopher Nolan. The film takes place during World War II and revolves around three main stories of the troops, the pilots, and the sailors, bringing all sorts of thrill and emotion to the audience.
