A Measured Response to Harvey by President Trump and First Lady
September 12, 2017
Hurricane Harvey. A deadly tropical storm in the Gulf Coast. Texas flooded in some areas with over 4 feet of rain. At least 60 people are dead – and the number is expected to rise.
Criticisms of President Donald J. Trump have not ceased whatsoever since he took office and they began in 2015 after he announced his presidential campaign. These past few weeks have been tragic for America and there have been a multitude of efforts to support the Texan people who have suffered so horribly in this most recent American tragedy.
The mainstream media around the country and the world has covered the devastation of Harvey with barely any bias and praise is due to all the networks for fair coverage. The mainstream media around the country and the world did not grant the same amount of respect to the responses of our President and First Lady to this deadly storm.
It is in the news every day and will likely remain for years to come: Donald Trump’s War on the Media. All of the news channels cover it. A select few cover the liberal and sometimes even conservative biases against President Trump from the mainstream media.
In this busy news week, however, the President’s critics were not entirely focused on him and his administration’s efforts to support the struggling state of Texas. They chose to focus on a useless and minuscule detail among a variety of major news stories – the First Lady’s shoes when she boarded Air Force One on the President’s first trip to Texas out of two in under one week.
Democrats and Republicans alike have agreed one aspect of Donald Trump and his administration is off limits to hateful commentary – his family. His wife has been graceful and elegant in her endeavors as the First Lady thus far and is committed to fighting for all Americans. Trump’s son is 11 years old. 11. He is not involved in politics whatsoever and has been criticized for one reason. His father is a controversial man with controversial views and there are some people who hate our President enough to pursue his 11-year-old son for absolutely no reason.
The slamming of President Trump, his administration, and his supporters is rather distressing to me. I am one of his supporters and I support him. I support his wife. I support his administration. I am a Republican. I do not ask for your agreement. I only ask for your respect and I assure you of mine to you.
Donald and Melania Trump visited Texas on August 29 in the wake of the devastation across the state caused by Hurricane Harvey and the first leg of their journey was one from the White House to the lawn where Marine One awaited them. The shoes mentioned earlier were the big news of the day because the First Lady walked approximately 200 feet to Marine One and then on to Air Force One in stiletto heels. Just 200 feet. Melania Trump departed Air Force One in Corpus Christi a few hours later and was wearing white sneakers. Those are the facts.
The Internet and the mainstream media blame the President for a great deal of our country’s issues and focusing on the First Lady’s shoes should not be anyone’s first priority. The biases and the double standards are clear. Most people do not praise Trump, however, I am going to. Donald and Melania Trump’s response to Harvey should be applauded and someone must shed light on the benevolent acts committed by this new administration.
This was the first significant natural crisis in Trump’s time as the President and he rose to the occasion by clearly promising the people of Texas they would not be forgotten. He visited Texas on August 29 and met with federal, state, and local law enforcement while continuously praising the efforts of the government and the people of Texas who he remarked “can handle anything.” He returned on September 2 with Melania again at his side and met the families affected by the storm and the endless number of volunteers assisting with the recovery efforts in Houston. The image at the top of this article depicts the First Lady and the President helping volunteers at a relief center hand out food to those who have been forced out of their homes. The pair also visited with more families and the Coast Guard on their second trip. Trump’s response to Harvey was perfect and the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, thanked the federal government by stating “all across the board, from the White House to the federal administration to FEMA, they’ve been very helpful.” The President and the First Lady ended their trip by visiting with Congressmen and members of the Coast Guard.
This is one issue we should not make political and we should acknowledge the efforts of President Trump and the First Lady without bias. Forget the politics and the controversial policies and the occasional inappropriate comment for just a minute and then observe what Trump has done with his own money. He has contributed $1 million of his own net worth to the Harvey efforts and he has approached this event in a way both Democrats and Republicans should be proud of. Hurricane Irma is coming to the East Coast now and it is comforting to know we have a President who is dedicated to the lives and the safety of his citizens.
