PTA’s Reflections: Within Reach

Linsey Becerra, staff writer

If you are a writer, musician, artist, dancer, or any other type of creative artist, then the Reflections program could be a great opportunity for you. Your skills and talents are exactly what PTA is looking for.

Reflections is a art program developed by the PTA that awards youth who enter artistic pieces centered around a theme. It is a wonderful program that allows kids, ages ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade, to express themselves in multitude of ways. The program has six different categories of entries: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. Each category is judged and awarded individually. The competition is held in stages and ends at a national level.

Every year, the PTA creates a new and interesting theme for artists to focus their piece on. This year’s theme is “Within Reach”. Each piece is to be interpreted in the artists’ personal and insightful way, and the manner in which the theme is interpreted is up to the artist. The margin of interpretation shows not only your creativity, but your critical thinking skills as well. The ability to create something new and unique involves a special sort of thinking that is highly valued in this competition.

The entries must include the entry form which can be found on your state’s PTA website. The form will need not only your personal information but a hundred word response about why you feel your piece fits the theme as well. You will be judged on your interpretation, creativity and technique.

If you are a Santiago shark and would like to enter this year, create your own piece that you would like to enter for the theme “Within Reach” then submit your art to Mrs. Weybright-Alvarez in room E202 before it is too late! The deadline for all entries is Friday, October 27th. For more information, see Mrs. Weybright-Alvarez for details.

This program has changed the lives of many who entered and has the potential to change yours as well. Don’t miss your chance to show off your talent and skills, and make yourself and your art the creative change our world needs to see!
