Naomi Joon: A Quick Look at the Artist

Emma Begley, Staff Writer

Naomi Joon creates art on paper, on clothing, in photographs, and on a multitude of other things.
Here’s a quick look at who she is:

What is Joon?

“It is me in art form; it’s my way of expressing myself. I enjoy putting my art onto clothing for
people to wear and appreciate.”

What inspires you to create the art that you do?

“I pull most of my inspiration from German Expressionism Art. I’m inspired by everything
around me, but I see it differently than others might, which is the basis of my art.”

When were you first introduced to art?

“My grandma has painted murals since she was a young girl, so I grew up around her and her
artistic influence. She was always very supportive of my art and was my first fan, helping me
improve and grow as an artist until this point of my life.”

When did you first begin putting your art on clothes?

“I first started at the beginning of sophomore year. I saw on Pinterest a pair of cherry blossom
jeans painted by Blake Lively and I was inspired to paint my own clothes. I went to the thrift
store and bought a pair of mom jeans, got my paint, and got to work. The first time I wore them, I
got a lot of comments on how cool and unique they were. After that, I painted my first jacket, and
from that point on it became a passion.”

As a local up-and-coming artist, what is most important to you in regards to your
clothing?

“The most important things to me are being original, staying true to myself and my particular
style, and always giving 100% of my effort to the art that I create.”

What other projects are you currently working on?

“I am currently in the process of designing a clothing line for the school fashion show of 2018,
which is artist inspired. I’m also creating my own textiles, which is basically my own fabric. I
was planning on painting on all of the fabric I have to create my own patterns that are completely
original and one of kind.”

Overall, what are your plans for the future?

“I plan to be hardworking in my craft and have my art become widely known by all.”
