What is a conservatorship?

Conservatorship is defined as a judge’s appointment of a guardian or protector to manage another person’s financial affairs and/or daily living due to old age or physical or mental limitations. A “conservatee,” a phrase that can refer to an adult is a person who is under conservatorship.

Why does Britney have a conservatorship?

In 2008 Britney was put under conservatorship due to a huge public breakdown. Her father Jamie Spears wanted to be in control of his daughter’s life and career, citing her mental health issues and substance misuse. An example of her seemingly erratic behavior was followed a year later when she shaved her head and attacked a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella. Her conservatorship was split into two parts: one for her estate and finance matters, the other for her personal issue. Since 2008, she has been unable to handle her finances due to this legal agreement. But in the years under her conservatorship, she released three albums, had a successful Las Vegas residency, and appeared on various television shows, including a stint as a judge on the US X Factor.

What has Britney Spears said on the conservatorship?

Britney hasn’t really spoken out about the #FreeBritney movement on social media but in June 2021 she decided to finally address the court directly on the “abusive” conservatorship. “I want to end this conservatorship without being evaluated,” Spears said in a tearful 20-minute speech to the court. Briteny also said, “This is doing me way more harm than good. I deserve to have a life.” Spears spoke before the court once more, this time implying that she was ready to “press charges” against her father. She stated, “I want to press charges for abuse on this conservatorship today… all of it.”

What has Jamie Spears said on the conservatorship?

Jamie Spears has made many remarks saying how much he supports his daughter and loves her unconditionally. His lawyer, though, expressed regret after his daughter’s court statement, saying he was “sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain.” Although in September Mr. Spears submitted his own petition asking the court to determine whether the conservatorship should be continued. Mr. Spears wants “what is best for his daughter,” according to the statement, and admits that she wants “management of her life back without the safety net of a conservatorship.”

Is Britney Spear’s father suspended from the conservatorship?

So far the most important thing to happen to the case was on September 29, 2021, when Judge Brenda Penny suspended Mr. Spears after a petition from Ms. Spear’s lawyer was granted. Supposedly Britney was given the opportunity of hiring her own lawyer and demands that her father is to be removed from the conservatorship. So after 13 years of being controlled on the singer’s life, finances, and career Britney’s father was finally suspended from the conservatorship.
