Santiago’s new Teacher : Mr. Rodriguez

We graciously accept our new teacher, Mr. Rodriguez, to our shark family. Before transferring to Santiago High School, Mr. Rodriguez was an El Cerrito Middle School teacher. Along with experience in teaching, Mr. Rodriguez has plenty more exciting things to present at the Santiago High School campus, one having eight legs and eight eyes! Following in his mother’s footsteps, Mr. Rodriguez is a very patient and sincere teacher who is loving his first year at Santiago High School.

What is your background in teaching?

“I came from a middle school, El Cerrito Middle School, where I taught for two years, and then before then, I started my career subbing long-term for all grades and ages. My mom was also a teacher, so that counts as a background.”

What was your first impression of Santiago? What made you want to teach here?

“The campus is nice, beautiful, and has a great view. I think my knowledge of it was more like one of the newer schools, which sits on a hill above everything else. So I think it has a regal quality and the colors are very nice. It’s just well-known as a great school.”

Have you taught any other subjects besides physics?

“I taught physical science, which is chemistry and physics. Now, I’m teaching mostly physics and one natural science class. I also taught biology for one year.”

Was teaching here anything like you predicted? If not, how so?

“I like my physics classes, and it’s been perfect. Some parts of it are different than El Cerrito, like the students are much more mature. But, it’s pretty straightforward.”

Which grade level is your favorite to teach?

I think I like the older kids. I liked third grade a lot, too.”

What do you feel makes you unique as a teacher? What makes you stand out?

“I don’t know if there is anything unique about me. However, I have two reptiles in my room, along with a tarantula. I also think I’m pretty patient.”

How long have you been teaching? What other careers have you had before?

“I’ve been teaching for four years; I worked in sales before that. I worked in a bakery and sold wedding cakes.”

Do you plan to take up another job after teaching? What job?

“Maybe as a tour guide, adventure guide, or something. Something like being outside and sharing my world knowledge with others.”

If you were off campus, what would a day in your life be like out of school?

I like to sleep in and spend time with my girlfriend. We are science nerds, so we like to go to aquariums, gardens, the ocean, and parks. We like to be outside and explore nature. Concerts and music are a big thing to us in our relationship.”
