The 66th annual Grammy Awards occurred this Sunday, February 4th, 2024. This year’s Grammys led to much discussion from the public. Celebrities like Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and SZA all attended the event. The artist who took first place with the most nominations was SZA, with nine nominations in all 91 categories. Three new categories were added this year. Trevor Noah also returned as the host for the fourth year.
Taylor Swift was the talk of the entire occasion, winning two Grammys for “Album of The Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Album.” Her album “Midnights” has made her the first person to win “Album of The Year” four times. While receiving her 13th Grammy, she brought her fellow artist and songwriter, Lana Del Rey, to the stage. This gesture has been considered controversial, and neither Taylor nor Lana has addressed what they felt. Lana Del Rey fans have flooded her Instagram comments on her Grammy post saying that she should have won the “Album of The Year” award for her album, “Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.” She did receive a nomination but ultimately lost to Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift has also come off as “rude” to the public for ignoring Celine Dion when receiving her “Album of The Year” award. Some people have taken to social media, such as TikTok and Instagram, to criticize Taylor for her actions. Something for Taylor Swift fans to look forward to, however, is her new album called “The Tortured Poets Department,” which will be released on April 19th of this year, which she announced during her acceptance speech for her award.
Miley Cyrus also took home 2 Grammys this year in the categories of “Best Pop Solo Performance” and “Record of The Year” for her song “Flowers.” The crowd was oddly silent during her music performance, to which she even commented, “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” to the crowd.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell won “Song of the Year.” It was made for the Barbie film, was highly influential to the public, and became famous after its release. Newer artists like Laufey and Tyla have also won their first Grammys this year. Laufey won the “Traditional Pop Vocal Album” for her album “Bewitched.” Tyla won her “Best African Music Performance” Grammy for her TikTok viral song, “Water.”
SZA won in three categories. She took home awards for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” for “Ghost in The Machine,” “Best R&B Song” for “Snooze,” and “Best Progressive R&B Album” for her album “SOS.” To top it all off, she also performed fan favorites “Kill Bill” and “Snooze,” leaving the audience mesmerized.
