Why the Current Rap Genre Sucks

Why the Current Rap Genre Sucks

Lucas Pari, Staff Writer

Before I start, I just want to say that these are just my opinions, and you can like current rap, and that’s completely okay – I just don’t. Now, I’m not saying that every old school rapper and rap group is great. There are some bad ones, including Chingy, Nelly, Vanilla Ice, D4L, Dem Franchise Boyz, Soulja Boy, Dylan, St. Lunatics, etc.  Before I break down modern rap, I would like to mention 5 current rappers I think are overrated.

#5 21 Savage

I’ve heard many people talk about this dude, so I tried to listen to one of his songs, and I failed. I am sick of the slow beat and the unenthusiastic lyrics. He’s just like French Montana, who sounds like he just doesn’t even want to be rapping. Seriously, get enthusiastic, and also, get rid of that stupid tattoo on your forehead.

#4 Lil Yachty

Anybody found a good Lil Yachty song yet? No? Neither have I. That dude needs to learn how to stop groaning into a mic and start writing down some actual lyrics. Bro, I watched you try to freestyle when you were on a radio station, and it was the most god-awful thing I have heard in a while. Just cut it out, dude.

#3 Young Thug

First off, this dude completely ripped off Lil Wayne. Young Thug did his best to dress like Lil Wayne, pose like Lil Wayne, and rap like Lil Wayne. Now, Lil Wayne is not even that good anymore. He was good when he first came out, but after his album “I’m Not A Human Being”, Lil Wayne became good friends with something called auto-tune. Young Thug uses so much of it, I don’t even know what he is saying. If you’re going to steal someone’s persona, maybe do some more research before you do.

#2 Gucci Mane

This dude relies on repetition so dang much. The first Gucci Mane song I ever heard started with the word “yea” and Gucci repeated it like 20 times before saying anything else! Also, he and Rick Ross do the same thing, which is rhyming words with themselves. In Rick Ross’s case, he rhymed Atlantic with Atlantic twice and 22 with 22 four times all in the same song. But somehow, Gucci found a way to beat that by rhyming heavy with heavy 8 times in the span of 10 seconds! He said his chain was heavy, his flow was heavy, and then just decided to say heavy about another 6 times! Come on man, lyrics are the key to making a good rap song.

#1 Drake

Oh. My. God. Man, this dude did not start from the bottom at all. When he was young, he lived in affluent areas. Do you know what affluent means? It means wealthy and successful. So what made Drake start from the bottom? Oh yeah, nothing. There are rappers like Eminem who barely stayed in one house throughout his entire childhood and had to work long hours of work plus overtime to provide for his family. This was while Drake was swimming in his pools and deciding whether or not he wanted to date Rihanna. And this dude is notorious for stealing another rappers’ flow and beats. In fact, he did it to XXXTENTACION earlier this year! Bro, write some truthful songs with your own flow once in a while, please.

 Mumble Rap

Alright, now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the mumbling in today’s rap. What happened to lyrics, man? Where did they go? Try to listen to Desiigner’s “Panda”. Now tell me the words that you heard in that song. I’m still waiting. I could not hear anything that he was trying to say. Desiigner actually had to make a video dissecting what he was saying so people would know. What rapper has to do that? And credit to Youtuber GulleyBoy, who said that it sounded like Desiigner was trying to communicate with aliens, because that’s what it sounded like to me, no doubt. There are many current rappers guilty of the cursed “mumble rap” including Gucci Mane, 21 Savage, Young Thug, and Lil Yachty which I’ve already mentioned, but there’s also 22 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert (who I will mention again), Kodak Black (who I will also mention again), Chief Keef,  Future, etc. Mumble rapping, is not real rapping, at least for me. I like knowing what someone is saying when they rap. Rap requires talent, mumble rap doesn’t. Anyone can do it, which is what I don’t understand. So, can I become a millionaire by mumbling into a mic too? That’s a dumb reason to make money.

Repetition

I would like to call out the two most repeated words in rap, “aye” and “yea”. I am so tired of listening to rap songs with these two words anywhere in them. Remember when I said that Lil Uzi Vert would appear again ? Well, here he is. This dude says “aye” and “yea” in about all of his songs. Uzi is guilty of the same thing as Gucci Mane is, saying “yea” more than 20 times at the beginning of his songs. Repetition just shows me how lazy today’s rappers are. Why can’t a rapper write lyrics that aren’t always repeating themselves these days? Please, guys, I like hearing more than only two words in rap songs. You too, OJ Da Juiceman, stop saying “aye” and “okay” so much.

Over-Hype

Down to my last category: over-hyped rappers. These are rappers who think they are great, but are terrible in hindsight. Hello again, Kodak Black. Kodak has said he is better than 2Pac and Bigge, the two G.O.A.T.s (Greatest of All Time) of the rap industry. Much like Lil Yachty, I saw Kodak try and freestyle, and man, did he fail. I think that if a rapper knows that they suck, they shouldn’t say they are amazing (cough, cough Kodak Black). And many times, people eat this up! Come on people, get some common sense into your brain, rappers that over-hype themselves are bad.
