If I had to describe season 3 of Good Girls in 3 words it would be: Expect the Unexpected.

After the shocking cliffhanger in season 2, we find out that Rio is still alive even after Beth shot him 3 times. Beth, Annie, and Ruby are unaware of this and finally believe now that Rio is “gone” their lives will restore some normalcy. But of course, that’s too good to be true.

One thing I love most about this show, and it’s very ironic, is that the more that Beth, Annie, and Ruby try to get out of this crime-filled life, they always end up dragging themselves further into it. We also see some comedic relief when Agent Turner dies, and instead of mourning Beth says “guess we’re back in business”. This marks the start of the money-laundering business.

Beth currently works at the Paper Porcupine, a card shop with Lucy, a shy, kind-hearted graphic designer. The start to the counterfeit money business begins when the girls ask Lucy to create fake money for Casino Night, a charity event for recovering gambling addicts (which doesn’t make any sense but that’s why I found it so hilarious). Lucy reluctantly agrees, and after a while, the fake money passes through the counterfeit money detector.

Beth befriends the ex-convict movers and gets them to works with her. But of course, he tries to screw them over. Beth and Gus had previously agreed on Gus getting a 10% cut, and to that, he responds “I mean 50”. Thankfully, Beth uses Gus’s situation to her advantage and threatens him by saying asking how many violations until Gus’s parole officer takes him back to jail.

Though as a viewer we find out pretty early that Rio is still alive, we see Beth struck with guilt and befriending Rhea because she feels bad for “killing” her baby daddy. She gives Rhea a bunch of soccer gear for her son Marcus and when Ruby and Annie confront her about it she exclaims “I murdered the kid’s dad alright? The least I could do… is get him into intramural sports.”

There’s a lot of buildup as to when Beth will finally find out that Rio is alive. One moment that really got me was when the screen shows Rio knocking on a door as Beth simultaneously receives a knock on hers. Much to my surprise, Rio is at Rhea’s door, and Beth greets Dean’s mom instead. Later on, Rhea and Beth are supposed to meet at the bar; however, Rio shows up in Rhea’s place. Beth is visibly shocked and there’s a ringing in her ears (I really enjoyed the auditory imagery) as she finds out Rio is still alive. Rio tells Beth that she has a 100,000 bounty on her head, and if she wants to stay alive that’s how much she’ll have to pay him. Beth is almost paralyzed and only makes out the words “I’m pregnant” during the whole conversation probably out of fear and shock. She then starts trying to get pregnant without Dean’s knowledge because she’s terrified of what would happen if Rio finds out she lied. She confesses to Rhea and says “he will kill me if he finds out.” Beth then informs Annie and Ruby about trying to get pregnant and Ruby responds “so you have a nine-month solution to a permanent problem?” This made me laugh, and I have to admit, I completely agree with Ruby here.

Rio shows up at Beth’s home, and Beth still keeps up the facade that she’s pregnant. He drives her to the Ultrasound place to confirm or deny her pregnancy. At this moment, I was like OMG no! He’s gonna find out she’s not pregnant and then probably shoot her on the spot. Thankfully, she has the sonographer lie for her and says she is pregnant. And later tells Rio she had a “miscarriage”.

Meanwhile, Stan is a bouncer at a club and Ruby works at a nail salon. Ruby wants to confess the counterfeit business to stan, but he says “[the] only way this works is if I know nothing.” They create a safe word “eggroll” when they don’t want to hear about each other’s work. Ruby’s daughter, Sara steals a ridiculously expensive pen and is having a hard time understanding why it’s okay for her mother to commit crimes, but she gets punished for it. Dean works at a hot tub spa, and Gayle (his boss) makes advancements towards him even though she knows he is married. He also kisses her, which doesn’t come as too much of a shock from Dean as he is falling back into his old habits. I never liked Dean anyway and expected him to cheat on Beth… again. Annie attends therapy with children’s therapist Josh Cohen and it’s easy to tell Annie is starting to develop a crush on him. In therapy, Annie wants to talk about Beth’s situation but realizes that it’s *cough cough* illegal. Therefore, she says that Beth has “eyeball cancer”, and coincidentally enough Josh says his mom had was diagnosed with Intraocular melanoma too. It was very clear that Annie was not expecting this, and her reaction was priceless. Annie also continues to pursue Josh even after he introduces her to his long-term girlfriend and now, fiancee.

Later on, Lucy refuses to design more money for the “casino night for gambling addicts” the second time, Beth, Annie, and Ruby bird nap her prized possession, Au Jus, or should I say, Dorito Bolland. One of my favorite part of the whole season is when Beth and Ruby were waiting for Annie to bird nap Au Jus and Beth turns to Ruby and asks “how much time [does she have left]?” Ruby nervously responds “I don’t know”, Beth is clearly confused and asks “what do you mean?” Ruby then explains “I hit lap timer…” Beth then says “what’s a lap timer?” I thought this moment was hilarious especially because Annie literally broke into Lucy’s house and has the chance of being caught and now they don’t even know how much time is left until Lucy’s boyfriend, Max comes back from his 10-minute power walk. Plus, I’ve hit lap timer so many times in my life and also have NO IDEA what it is for! Another honorable mention for the funniest moment is the montage of Max learning how to shoot a gun (if you know, you know).

I was absolutely devastated when Lucy died. She reminds me of one of my best friends and I was so attached to her character. Lucy was so wholesome and genuinely kind, she really didn’t deserve her fate. I mean, I know Rio’s stone-cold (don’t get me wrong, Rio is one of my favorite characters), but my heart broke when they killed Lucy, so much that I had to take a small break from watching the show to mentally recover. I also felt so incredibly bad for Max because he was so devastated and confused after Lucy’s sudden disappearance.

As for the next season, I’m overjoyed to see what the writer’s come up with. This season especially, I was not expecting to see Boomer again, or even see Annie want to pursue a career as an EMT after Ruby was shot (a moment that also left me speechless). I’m excited to see what information federal agent Phoebe Donnegan digs up about the girls, and whether or not their criminal ways will be exposed (or if they’ll get away with it now). I’m interested to see how the money-laundering business will work now that Dean and Beth own the hot-tub business to wash the money. I’m also really interested to find out if the hitman will actually manage to kill Rio, and how he will go about doing so. After all, in the last episode of season 3, the girls raise their glasses to hitmen, which may be foreshadowing Rio’s death in the upcoming season. Overall, there’s no way I couldn’t rate this season, let alone this show anything less than a 10/10. It piques my interest, and always keeps me on my toes.

What was your favorite moment of the season? Do you think the girl’s money laundering business will be exposed? Will the hitman actually kill Rio? Are you excited for season 4?
