At just 21, Robert Irwin, known worldwide as the wildlife-loving son of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, has added a new crown to his family legacy: the honorable Mirrorball Trophy from Dancing with the Stars (DWTS). In season 34, Robert partnered with professional dancer Witney Carson and triumphed over fierce competition, including social media influencer Alix Earle and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles.
But this win wasn’t just about dancing under the spotlight. It was a deeply emotional journey, one rooted in family, legacy, and a desire to honor his father’s memory.
From Zoo Keeper to Conservation Voice
Before stepping onto the ballroom floor, Robert spent years working at Australia Zoo, the same wildlife sanctuary founded by his father and mother, Terri Irwin. The Irwin family remains committed to conservation through Wildlife Warriors, an organization originally co-founded by Steve and Terri that continues to protect endangered animals worldwide.
Growing up surrounded by animals, Robert learned early on the value of compassion and hard work. In 2025, when DWTS producers announced him as the first celebrity contestant of Season 34, he responded with tears of joy, calling it a childhood dream come true.
He later explained that watching his sister, Bindi Irwin, win DWTS Season 21 in 2015 was among his earliest inspirations. “I have these little dreams, and now that dream is a reality”, he said.
Dancing with Purpose: Honoring Family & Legacy
Much of Robert’s journey on DWTS became about more than dance steps; it became a tribute and love.
On “Dedication Night,” Robert performed a moving contemporary routine to “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins. As part of the choreography, his mother, Terri, joined him on stage; a tribute to the family that kept him going after his father’s tragic death in 2006.
For his final performance, Robert chose a foxtrot to “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis, the same song Bindi had used for her DWTS victory. With Bindi beside him and a montage of childhood photos of Robert and Steve projected below them, the dance brought both viewers and Robert to tears. The judges awarded him a perfect score of 40.
According to Parade, Robert called the experience “healing,” saying he felt his father’s spirit with him in that moment. “I carry Dad’s legacy with me in everything I do.”
Against the Odds: Injury, Pressure, and Expectations
Robert didn’t come into DWTS as a trained dancer, and not without physical challenges. As reported by Wikipedia, he suffered a rib cage injury before the finale. Yet, with Witney’s support and his own determination, he continued. That vulnerability, combined with his family’s emotional story and his genuine passion, resonated deeply with fans. Viewers acknowledged his growth across the competition, applauding his humbleness, courage, and the authentic emotion he brought each week.
A Legacy Evolved: What This Win Means
Robert’s Mirrorball triumph is more than a trophy. It represents hope, perseverance, and a renewed spotlight on what the Irwin family has always stood for: connection with nature, compassion, love, and resilience.
In his post-finale interviews, Robert said winning DWTS “absolutely changed my life.” He said he hoped this victory would help amplify awareness for conservation and inspire others to follow their own dreams, no matter how unlikely.
For fans, it wasn’t just entertaining television. It was a powerful tribute to a father lost too soon, a celebration of family unity, and a beautiful example of how one can carry a legacy forward.
